Title: Backing up
Post by: Breaktru on November 15, 2008, 09:24:27 AM
It is highly recommended that you back up your Payroll created files to a Thumb Drive/CD/Dvd/External HD etc.. at least once or twice a month. Do not backup the software files. Only user/employee files.
From Windows Explorer or My Computer find the necessary files, they will be in the default folder called: C:\Payroll 200X. Drag and copy to your external media.

The files are small in size and can easily be copied back into your folder: C:\Payroll 200X by dragging them off of the backup media with your mouse from Windows Explorer.
Note: Any file that you put on a CD will become "Read only" and the attribute MUST be removed when you copy it back to your hard drive. See "Restore".

Backup ONLY user/employee files that where created by the program such as:
EmployeeName.and
EmployeeName.cfe
EmployeeName.cti
EmployeeName.hol
EmployeeName.nci
EmployeeName.ovb
EmployeeName.ovw
EmployeeName.sta
EmployeeName.use
EmployeeName.yrb
EmployeeName.yrw
Header.sav

Depending on their status, more/different EmployeeName extension types will exist. Copy them as well.

You will also need to backup any Payroll files that look like this:

month_day_year EmployeeName.prv
Example: 12_10_2022 Joe Blow.prv

I can't tell you how important it is to periodically back up your user files.
My computer recently crashed and all data was lost.
After having my hard drive replaced, I installed the Payroll Software and used the back up I created on my USB memory stick and thank goodness, I'm back in business. Only the user files have to be backed up and not the software it self.
