No I'm still trying to decide how to finish it. Got a few ideas, just need to commit and start.

Is it costly to get something prototyped with 3d printing?  I keep meaning to look into it.

This cost about $60 plus shipping for just the printed parts.

I'm trying to figure out a good way to offer it to modders at cost. However as of right now I don't have a way to limit the purchase qty off of shapeways.

I know from the screen cradles that people are purchasing them in large enough quantities that they are using them in mods for resale. Which doesn't really bother me on the screen cradles. But it would on the mod itself.

Keep it under wraps. Nothing pisses me off more than a slacker making a profit off of another's design. Making one for them self is fine and dandy but to profit off it is the pits.

Now that looks sweet, nice size for a dual 18650 mod. That will look really awesome once it's got a proper coating. Sure would like one for myself. I have also been looking for contacts like those for weeks and have had no luck...

The contacts are keystone, they are the ones used in their SMT 18650 battery holders. The Keystone internal part# is F1016-1. I contacted Keystone directly and they sent me some samples. They are purchasable as I gave the part number to someone running a coop on ECF and they were able to source them thru several vendors.

Thanks for all the praise!!!

Here is what I'm getting after some sanding. It now feels very velvety along with dirty. From what I have read they say scrubing with hot water and dish soap or washing in the dishwasher is the best way to clean it. But I have a feeling it's never going to be clean white again.

I picked up some black Rit and will try that with some vinegar after I do some more sanding.

I'm starting to wonder if polished white strong and flexible would be a better way to go, as I believe they used a tumbling process to create a smooth finish. Then it could be dyed or painted without much if any sanding.

Really cool.  Love that 3D printed stuff.

Not sure about the Shapeways materials, but the ones I get from another shop are incredibly strong and light.  It's not cheap, but it's affordable.

I've had a lot of trouble finding a finish that holds up well for mine.  At this point, I've been wet sanding them then I use an engine paint and bake them at 200F.  Everything else I've tried breaks down from juice exposure.  If you have an airbrush, there are some two part paints for automotive use that would probably hold up well, I've just been using the rattle can stuff.

Awesome layout!! Look forward to seeing where this goes production wise.
Ritt dye is the bomb. I've done R/C car parts before and they came out great!! It all depends on what your trying to dye. My parts were a bit of a creme color (once I stripped the chrome off letting them soak in bleach) I used Royal blue but I left them in a smidge too long and they came out a tad bit purpleish but I still liked the outcome. If they were white like your mod I'm sure I could have gotten blood red perfect. I did try parts that were not prepared just to see and they didnt take the dye. I think the sanding will help in the end give it a nice velvet finish and to help the dye take deep in the pores.  8)

I have also use Rit dye for RC stuff, but it's not working so great in the printed material....at least the sanded portions......the dye took great on the inside where it wasn't sanded.

Here is a pic after the first dye treatment.

It was still velvety and I didn't like the feel or finish. So I got serious about sanding and sanded it completely smooth.

I tried re dyeing it and even left it soaking overnight and it still didn't take along the edges. I'm going to try some leather dye and see how that works. I have used it before when making concealed carry holsters and it seems to dye anything it comes in contact with.

Too bad you are in Utah =\  We could chill vape target shoot stuff were dragging with R/C toys  :rockin smiley:

I'm sure you will come out with something good. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Watch you will stumble on a dope ass color scheme people will be jealous of.  If you come up with a good USMC Woodlands Marpat (digi cammies) I'll take it off your hands

I'm not sure how shapeways works in terms of keeping things to yourself but could you order x amount and then choose who/how many to sell out ? It should also be possible for you to add lettering indented to "brand" the mod for yourself.

I am not setup or want  to be, for keeping and selling stock.

I got official word back from shapeways that they don't have any additional options to help solve this problem. So below is probably how it will work.

The parts will probably be available for order from shapeways, however they will be marked up enough for me to fill good about them possibly being used by someone to build and resell.  When and how much TBD.

A couple of people have offered to run a co-op on ECF so prices can be kept low and max order qtys be set. When and how much TBD.

After receiving the first one I have a few changes to make and then order another one to verify the changes.

Thanks!!!

I have been working on the DNA SxS (side by side) for a long time.....ever since I built the kicked SxS....lots of trial and error in CAD.....if I could only talk Brandon into a Kick-ish sized  DNA I could drop the height of the atty side quite a bit.   :laughing2:

I'm hoping the DNA SxS is the perfect mod for me. I love my Kick SxS.....Easy and quick change 18650, nice and small pocket-able size, but I miss the information and etc that the DNA provides.

For those not familiar with my Kick SxS...here is a couple pics

I got contacted by a professional hydro dipper (I guess the correct terms are Hydrographics and water transfer printing) and I'm thinking about sending him the prototype to have a go at it.

However check out what I found while doing a little Hydrographics research....self printable transfer film!!!

Umm, wow! That is Purdy even in white. That's actually perfect size for a mod in my book. Ever thought of renting or purchasing  your own 3 printer?  Not sure it would be cost effective for limited run stuff but unsure of how pricey they are.

I have access to a 3D printer at work, but it's just a filament type. Shapeways uses a laser sintering process and is much more accurate, smoother, and able to do much finer detail.

Have you thought about selling it as a diy kit? I'd buy one depending on  the price point. I'm just waiting to find a dna30 to put into a wood box that I will make. Can't find one.

Sneak peak at the latest from shapeways

I will get a lot more pics and better pics. The black detail buttons actually look a lot better then the pic. The polished alumide is irregular, which I like. Again the pic doesn't really do the polished alumide justice, but you can notice they do look different.

I would really be interested in purchasing that case. If i had a dna30 to put inside. Great work. Those are innovative designs that you should be credited with.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the design will probably be available for purchase on shapeways marked up enough that I won't feel bad about it being purchased to build and sell. There will likely be a coop ran on ECF to offer it at cost in limited purchase quantities for modders. I will post those details in this thread when the details have been worked out. So if your interested in that make sure your a member at ECF and verified.

I'm a member just not verified. Haven't posted much there. More here and the ecf chat. I prefer here and the chat actually. Something about this place. Perhaps all the more diy centered topics. The ecf chat for real time help.

Yeah its in the bar at the top of the page. Live Chat. Takes you to rebbit. Once you know the port and room you can use a irc client on your smart phone. Check it out. Your knowledge would be a great addition.
