DNA30 BOONBOX
« on: April 13, 2014, 12:17:30 AM »
My first DNA30 made from pine.

Tried to make it as compact as possible which made wiring and inserting the battery a pain.

I don't think i could of done this without MAMU's instructional pdfs to refer to  ;cheers;

Love the performance on this thing, think my VAMO will now gather dust.

no, they were laser cut i think. i got a box of them on ebay for $10 i think. I'm trying to learn woodcarving at the moment so hopefully my next one will have the designs carved directly into the wood

so, i plugged in a usb cable into my mods micro charge port (evolve charger) and the red light comes on. Its been plugged in for over 2 hours and the battery indicator hasn't moved. It started on just over half full and its still there. is it possible that the led indicator can function properly and the charge capability not work at all? or if the led works should the charging work?  or could the led and battery indicator be faulty and its still charging? :help:

A 2100mah may take 4.2 hrs to charge with the evolv 500ma charger. That is if the charger was consistently charging at 500mah which it doesn't.
Depending on the chip used in the charger and depending on the battery state some chargers start off with a trickle charge of 10% of the max amperage rate of the charger before going into full amperage charge.

Formula for calculating batteries charging time :

hr = mAh / mA

The charger controllers I've been using enter the precharge mode (10% of the full rate) when cell voltage is below 3.0V.  It doesn't normally happen with the cutout I use (3.3V), but I've drained cells enough in testing to enter precharge mode.  It usually doesn't last too long, maybe 10 minutes at the most, but if you take the cells down low enough it could last a while.  Not sure about other controllers like the one on that inexpensive board from China (don't recall the part number of that controller but it's mentioned a lot in the forum here).

is it possible for the LED indicator to display correctly as well as the battery indicator on the DNA screen to function properly, but at the same time it doesn't charge?

i had it plugged in for 4 hours last night and the battery indicator didn't move  :no:

Love your mod, Boonos!

The reason it's not charging could be faulty charging board, faulty wiring, or faulty traces on the DNA CHG pins.  Check those sources.

im pretty sure its wired correctly (directly to the board) the LED comes on. i epoxied the port to the board prior to epoxying the board to the box, but when the cable is inserted, it is possible to ever so slightly wiggle it left to right which implies that the port may be slightly lose on the board. this sucks as I've sealed the box with wood glue. i'm sure i'll be able to get in there with a chisel but will damage the box in the process :(

it wasn't the charger as i tried it with a different charger which i know works so i think its the dna board (i didn't test the charging before epoxying). I've ordered some magnets to secure the wood in place so it can be removable when i need to remove the battery to charge

Remove the charger from the DNA and wire it directly to the battery. Don't forget to fuse it.

i don't think theres a way i can get to the battery wires as they are epoxied down to the enclosure.

not sure if this would even work, but i can't even run additional pos (with fuses) and neg wires to the dna as thats epoxied in too with all the other wires covering it

If you used gel or clear epoxy you can use a heat gun to soften the epoxy, then with tweezers carefully remove it from the wires.  Disconnect or remove the batt first.

i used 5 min epoxy, but its so tight in there i fear i'll wreck something, not sure i could even get a heat gun under the other wires. i'll remove the bat for charging and put this down to experience :)

new DNA30 :)

Upon inserting the battery, there was a little spark that came from the board and now the 'down' button doesn't work  some thing got shorted. the DNA doesn't round-robbin on the wattage settings so this will probably get frustrating. Is there any way to reset it so it reboots at its lowest wattage setting?

If you wire the charger directly to the battery where exactly should the fuses be placed? Do you mean use two fuses or just make sure the positive connection is fused?
