hey Breaktru, got my chip. now, just wanna ask, to test it out, I wire the batteries to the voltage in pins and get the result out of the voltage out, right? my question is in this setup, (without caps and all) what voltage should I get? just wanna make sure I didn't get a dud...

Sorry for the late reply Ginjo. Lost power for 2 days due to Hurricane Sandy.

You need caps if your testing with a load.
If you are not using a Pot and you leave the adjust pin OPEN, your output will be 0.6v

You need caps if your testing with a load.
If you are not using a Pot and you leave the adjust pin OPEN, your output will be 0.6v

I can't believe the devastation caused by the Hurricane. Hope everyone is safe.

With two 18350's in series, the 08100w at an angle to reduce height, the PB, the pot, the retainer ring and the batt positive insulator w/ pos stud, the overall length is 6 inches. Allow for battery spring compression.
Before you cut your tube, wire the 08100 board and layout all the internal components next to the tube and mark it for length.

I still have this old mod of mine using this but just the internals..instead of putting them on a copper mod I practically squeezed them on a Marlboro fullpack altoid can,.,still works and I use it as my daily vape...

now I just would like to re do it,problem is last year I had the time to look for tantalum caps and salvage them from old TV's and the likes now I don't...

can you suggest a substitute for tamtalum caps?

You can use Aluminum Electrolytic as well as Tantalum caps.
I have use these Low ESR caps in both the PTN04050C and the PTR08100W ---> 100uF, 10V

The trim circuit is low amperage. Anything 0.05 watts or higher will do for the resistor and pot. Ideally a 1% tolerance is needed.

The resistor will be fine at 5% tolerance but 1% is better for a defined output range. The caps are low impedance so they are good to use. I've used those caps before.

Small point but just for something to talk about, impedance is actually pretty high for any capacitor, that's kind of it's job.  Most generically, impedance is like resistance with the AC information included.

If a right triangle is formed with resistance on the X axis and the effects of capacitance or inductance on the Y axis (known as reactance), impedance is the length of the hypotenuse.  This is known as a vector magnitude or usually just a magnitude.  You'll sometimes see it noted as |Z|, but often it's just Z.  Impedance is typically noted as Z instead of R though it has the same units of Ohms.

For things that don't have a lot or inductance or capacitance, impedance is pretty much the same as resistance since the Y axis leg is really short.  In that case, you can say impedance and resistance are pretty much the same thing.

Reactance changes with frequency so impedance also changes with frequency.  If you look at the impedance chart in the characterization sheet for any capacitor you'll see that.  It's the resistive leg in the impedance of a capacitor of most interest which is specified as ESR.  That give's you "real" power loss and indicates how well the capacitor can deliver the energy it stores. 

It's the same idea as the DCR for a battery.  High drain batteries deliver power more efficiency because they have less internal resistance just like capacitors deliver power more efficiently when they have less ESR. 

Li-Ion batteries can have a good amount of capacitance and inductance because the plates have a lot of surface area in there.  Typically internal impedance for a Li-Ion battery is specified at a low frequency like 1kHz, but sometimes they provide DCR as well.  They're usually pretty close so you can get a good idea of a battery's DCR from its internal impedance spec.

You don't have to concern yourself too much with impedance in doing DC stuff.  Impedance is involved only when calculating the AC response of a circuit with respect to time and frequency.  The math gets hairy pretty quick so you normally don't mess with it.  You just use a circuit simulator for that stuff.  They had to do it in the old days though, with a slide rule no less.  Don't know how anything got designed back then.

For converters NOT using the on/off control pin such as this one, a fuse will protect against reverse polarity.

So i can use 20ga wire throughout?? I'm going to use the mosfet/volt display diagram for the PTR8100. I didn't know if the 20ga wire in the original diagram was still safest. It's the "unregulated" mods that need 14ga, yes?? "regulated mods I can use 20ga. Is this right??

20 gauge or heavier is good. Lighter gauge for the trim circuit.
