Aluminum Evercool
« on: December 09, 2011, 10:56:11 PM »
This time my free sample reg from TI worked. Found a nice aluminum box today and here is my first VV mod. I wanted a metal button but they were all too large to fit.

Nice pnguin. Well done. I like the box.
This would look real good in your box:

Thanks. I have one of those buttons and wanted to use it but the box is a hair too thin, it did not fit. Darn ultrafire battery gave up on me after one day so I have ordered some trustfire flames.

Thanks for the tip. Those metal ones look like the same size as I have in there so they should work great. I will order one and give it a shot.

Aluminum evercool gets a display
« Reply #5 on: December 23, 2011, 06:01:30 PM »
I just couldn't leave the poor mod alone. Had to put in a display, I needed a shoehorn to fit it in but it works. Put in a slide switch on the side to turn the display on and off.

Thanks but it looks better in the picture than up close. These cast boxes have a lot of small imperfections that won't polish out. I went through the whole process from fine sandpaper to steel wool then rubbing compound and finally metal polish but the results were not worth the time so I will leave all future ones rough.

Here is version 3. I improved the display cutout, used the Dimension Engineering SWADJ-3 regulator instead of the TI PTR 08100, and used heavier duty slide switches for the main on/off and meter on/off. I love the SW reg, only 3 wires to mess with. The only gripe I have is I can't figure out how to attach a knob to the integral POT, so adjustment has to be done with a screwdriver through a hole in the case. Any suggestions on that or anything else you all can see would be appreciated. The polish is as good as it gets with this cast case, sanded with progressively finer paper, then steel wool, then progressively finer abrasive compounds, then polished and buffed with a wheel. I am looking into the craftsman powder coating system for $27 on ebay and a cheap toaster oven to get a nice finish in cool colors.

Nice job pnguin,
I like the bevel for the DM and the slide sw cuts look really good.
IMO, The Adjusting is not something you would play with too much so I wouldn't be to concerned about a knob.

I checked the range today. With the Dimension swadj3 I am getting from 2.8V to 7.3V. WOW!

you can paint cast aluminum you just have to go through extra steps...

clean clean clean.... self etching aluminum primer paint(zinc chromate primer)coat with paint of your choice and then clear coat it...you may want to sand it in between coats

Painting is definately an option but I am leaning towards the powder coat because of it's durability.

That green tank mod I had at the last meet ran 14.7 on the high end(due to a bad resistor) it's toned down to 7.4 now. But was shocked when that mega dual coil from madvapes didn't pop at 14 volts.

I think it must take more than a short overload to pop them. I hit the button twice at 26V but only for a second or so each time.
