My first 5V Mod
« on: January 23, 2012, 12:27:38 AM »

Ok I know I used cheap caps but I have no budget to build so I went with what I could get.  I had a burned out ego-t bat that I stole the atty connector from. I did use the PTN0405C chip just boosted to 5V next one will be VV. All in all was a fun experience.  Oh by the way I have fat fingers and it made making this thing kinda challenging but worth it.

Oh, BTW, for your next mod, here are the connectors you'll want for cheap.

Ok got a ? about cartos on this mod. I have been running boge 3.0 from CCV My question is I will be vaping on a carto and when the battery dies I swap it out for a newly charged one. 2 of my 4 batteries wont run a couple carts of mine it fires for 1 maybe 2 seconds then cuts out, change to a carto to one I know that battery will fire and it works fine. It is the same ohm as I have checked just wont run it. any ideas?

You're probably hitting the over-current protection on those batteries.  It's a combination of the slight variance in specific trip point between the batteries and the variation in resistance from one carto to the next.  Your current demand is right on the edge so two of your cells trip and two don't.  The difference in resistance between cartos is smaller than you could measure with a cheap multi-meter, but enough to make a difference for the protection circuitry in the batteries.

People typcially use IMR cells in booster mods because they don't have protection and don't trip from over-current.  It's possible to cause over-current for them, but an IMR 14500 can safely deliver 5 Amps.  That's more than you would need unless you're running low resistance at higher voltage.

The down side with IMR batts is they are not protected so they have to be handled with a little more awareness.  The chemsitry is safer so they're not hazardous or anything, but they're not perfectly safe either.  Also, they don't have quite as much charge capacity as the regular protected cells.

Booster mods have double the current demand compared to dual cell buck mods.  It's because the booster is taking lower voltage and higher current to make higher voltage and lower current.  A dual cell buck mod does the opposite so the protected batts work better in those.

Thank you again Craig always helping out.   :rockin smiley: :rockin smiley:

Ok so looking at the price of those batteries I will wait and just cycle the carts I know will work with these ones for now.

Yea, they're not exactly a dime a dozen.  The AW ones are most popular for good reason.  They have good quality reliably.  I think I paid 8 bucks a pop for the last set of AW IMR 14500s I bought.  I like my LiPo flat cells, $4 a pop from HobbyKing and they have almost 4 times the charge capacity and almost 10 times the drain rate.  They're a lot bigger though.
