18650 Gripper in wooden box
« on: January 31, 2013, 12:24:40 PM »
I have an 18650 VV Gripper and after a while the connection on the battery door gave out.  I originally took it apart to re-solder the connection but I couldn't get the enclosure to go back together.  I ripped the guts out and built a wooden box enclosure for it.

I used all the original parts except the battery spring.  In the Gripper the spring contacts the pos end of the battery.  I used the metal strip they use for neg and made it pos and used a spring out of an 18650 battery box for neg.

Ok, spend days and days making the wooden enclosure, install all the guts and put in the battery.  Everything is fine.  It starts up, shows battery level and atty resistance ok.  The up and down voltage adjustment works fine BUT when I fire the thing it pulses...like it fires for about a second, then off for a second, then back on.  I don't know what the deal is.

Could it be something to do with the resistance of the spring I added?  I double checked my solder connection and all look good.   Maybe I messed something on the board up when handling it.  *sigh*  :wallbash:

Oh well, if I can't figure this out maybe I can use this enclosure for my next 04050c mod.

Electronics are usually not physically sensitive to being handled, but can be sensitive to ESD or static discharge.  The other thing that can break them is excessive heat from improper soldering.

Boosters are typically sensitive to any resistance inline with the battery.  It's possible the spring is causing a problem.  Battery springs can have a lot of resistance and they vary.  Most are not designed for the high currents required by an e-cig.  If you try a higher resistance atomizer and it works, but fails to work with lower resistance atomizer, that would be a sign of that happening.  Also, if it happens when the battery is low and does not happen when the battery has a full charge, that would also indicate a resistance problem.

Nice wood box kortt  :rockin smiley:
Hopefully it's just a simple fix of the spring.

I haven't figured it out yet.  I sort of put it aside for now.  Focusing on some different mod ideas at the moment.

Ahh... too bad. Well done on the construction of the box!

My Gripper is less than a week old, and I have been bitten by the urge to build so I am hoping to be able to find someone willing to sell me one with a working chip... Or I might have to spring for one of those fancy DNA's.

Thanks for the reply and have fun with the other mods!

Took at look at my Gripper mod again today and figured it out.  The original switch wiring was done poorly and I must have jarred something when installing the module in the wood box.  I replaced the original switch and wiring with something a bit more substantial and the initial test look good.

Now just waiting for some glue to dry and I can button it up.  Not sure how I'm going to make the enclosure "stay together".  I don't like magnets, so might use some small hinges as I did with my last DNA12 mod.  I'll post a pic or two once it's all done.

I guess it's not that I don't like them, it's just I haven't had much luck getting them installed properly on mod doors, enclosures.  Being visually impaired it's hard for me to get them lined up quite right.

Gonna get to work on my transplant too.

Thanks :)  I'm not really sure I like where the fire button is.  I may end up tearing it apart and doing something else with it.  oh_my:

How about replacing the square wooden piece behind the button with a round brass washer or something to that nature.

That would likely look better.  Problem is, when I glued the switch in I got it off by a bit and it stick out of the case a tiny bit so it's not quite flush.  I used the wood because I could form the bottom of it to compensate for the switch sticking up a bit. I'm not happy with the hole the screen shows through so maybe I will make a new front for it and re-set the switch properly.

Looks really nice.

You know where I'd put the trigger button, in front, really comfortable using your index finger.  Probably be possible to mount the switch in front of the battery negative by boring a path for the wires in the box wall.

I had looked for something like that online for hours one night recently! Had no idea what to call it.
"Sleeve washer" was the closest I came. Thanks for posting this.
