Idea for flashlight mod build
« on: May 31, 2012, 10:43:04 AM »
Hello palls,
Started to make my own mod from suitable chines flashlight. Will be based (first version) on two 18350, KIS-3R33s, Li-Po battery checker for indicator.
So far so good.
But have an unusual problem. Can't make stop of plus pin of upper battery  Some colleges advised me to make it with stop screws trough the body in Delrin grommet in which center are plus pin. But I don't wont to make such intervention over good anodized body, even with M1 screws.
Second idea was to glue grommet with some superglue or double component (like liquid metal glue) but not sure how will compound superglue, aluminum body and Delrin grommet.
Some other fine and elegant ideas from mod masters?

PS: Is it pressed in body this metal ring over the electronic of Lava?

I thought one of the modders here would chime in to help. That's why I didn't reply right away Topper.

Being that is an aluminum tube probably your best bet would be to go with the screws and maybe very small #4 flat head cap screws and counter sink them so they will sit flush and not protrude.
Is the delrin rigid enough or is it flexible. You want something to hold up to the pressure of the battery spring.

On my copper tubing I punched dimples in the tube but that won't work with aluminum.

Thanks anyway Breaktru.
Will think more how to fix delrin and yes, its solid and hard. Made already M3 tread for a contact screw and it holds fine (in 4mm thick gormmet). Have a very small screws w/o heads but its black instead of shine tube and red oxidized tube. Will be a little ugly ...if they combine with black buttons, will think about that.
I know your copper project and this cutout ring is clever, but not fit in my project for pitty.

Not yet :(
I have a sick daughter and newborn child  ;cheers; and I'm little busy right now, but till now the work is 85% done.
Still to do is to drillout inside diameter of flashlight to 18.5-18.7mm and to mill with some friends the window for the voltmeter.
Also must find policarbonat rod to make a sector, which will hold (or glue to) display and will mill also to be on the same high window like the outside diameter of main body.
And, maybe, a 3 position small switch, if I find something around me, to make digital indicator measure Vout, Vin and Off.
Not so much to do, but need a time to be accomplished  :yes"

This was first try with 510 threat. Was lazy but with idea to be more stable. Not liked and after that was made as thin, as posible (with grommet from 50cts bulgarian ;) )

This is a setup trimer

This is a trimer with knob

With same knob will try to make and start button.
So far, so good :)

I need some skill help here palls  ???
Made few (ugly) attempts to put small and nice knob for adj of trimer. But the knob falls - nothing to keep it tide in place. After that started to make some rings which I wanted to glue in main body and stick in it knob but....I know now that very tide Al to Al can't be moved nor turned, so the knob always blocked. Will try tomorrow with delrin/teflon rings but the "hole" in body is already like window around dia 5-6mm and I'm afraid will have one more try and... must buy another flashlights.
C'mon boys and mod masters give some ideas

Are you saying that the glue got on trimmer and that's why it won't turn?
Do you have close up photos?

Nope, I just have in mind that al.ring must be glued to the body.
Aluminum knob make a lot of friction to the aluminum ring. I thought that way will stick the knob in place but didn't have in mind friction ....
I'm sorry but was so angry of my no-knowledge and didn't make any photos :(

Something describe:
On this photos I've replaced LED plastic ring in black, which was too lose for the my good looking not-home-made knob (which is not on the snapshot) and made new, bigger, tide al.ring...after that made a bigger hole in top body to insert the new al.ring and result was ugly, high, big ring and sticking knob :(

Is there a way to force a bit of Vaseline between the O ring and the knob?  or shoot a bit of mineral oil with a fine syringe between them?

Very good. Looks fantastic  :beer-toast:
Is that the switch that came with the flashlight or something else?

Yes it's factored :)
Made from piece stainless steel on suitable dimensions.
Thread 510 is mounted like lenses on objectives - with holding ring. That way can dismount it for few seconds.
Only one don't finished thing ....but I leave it that slim way - the adjustment is hidden inside and there is no knob for manual adjust but it's not big deal. It's slicky that way :)
