Calculator Questions
« on: April 04, 2013, 03:54:26 PM »
 :help:    I was looking on
https://www.e-cig.com/shopping/products/25-E-Liquid-Nicotine/
They have pure nic but they don't give the number (like 48mg or 100mg) they are telling me to put 999 in the calc.
In a 10ml mix with 18mg of nic that only calls for 0.18ml of nic
This would be great if it is right...as a 50ml bottle of it would go forever   :)
Has anyone ever used or heard of that high a nic number?

Pure nicotine is a little above 1000mg per ml.  It's extremely hazardous to handle and you need special lab gear to do it.  It would only take a few drops on your skin to poison you.  The highest level you can safely handle without special protection is 100mg per ml and even then, you have to be careful with it.

I would stay away from it being that it is 99.9% Pure Nic. Craig already pointed out how dangerous it is.

Thanks Craig & Breakthr.....I knew you guys would be in the know about it.....may have saved me a big headache   :thankyou:
Why would they sell that on a e-cig site
I am new to this mixing your own thing....trying to find the best place/way to do it. The most for my buck.
I already screwed up & got a 50ml bot of the base mixed 50/50 won't go very far, & got a 15ml bot of 48mg nic think I could have done better.
They have PG/VG in 300ml botttles. Going to order them in separate bots.

One thing I've found about Chinese vendors is they'll pretty much sell anything to anybody.  They put all safety considerations on the buyer.   Since there are no real controls in China regarding transactions like that, they do it without any repercussions if something bad happens.  In fact, when dealing with Chinese products in general, safety is often a low priority.  That's not to say all Chinese products are bad.  I've bought some products with acceptable quality, in fact I've seen very good quality with a couple.  You just have to be really choosy when buying stuff from over there.

Being that you're new to the DIY thing, I would start off small. It's easier on the pocket book if you have to throw out mistakes.

My suggestion: When you are ready, buy unflavored Nic at 100mg strength and 50/50 PG/VG. It goes a long way. I have a 250ml bottle for almost a year. A little goes a long way and dollar for dollar it's a good economical choice. Caution should still be used handling it.
The reason I mentioned 50/50 is that it's easier to adjust to a higher or lower Target PG/VG ratio.
At first, mix only what you need for a couple of days until you know what's what. I personally mix for a weeks worth.

Craig,
Is that a Chinese company their site said that all their bases are FDA approved.
I was only mixing 5 to 10 ml at a time, but have hit on one I like a lot so was going to do a 15ml mix on it.
That is about a weeks worth for me.

Breaktru,
I have the 50/50 but then I have to jack around with the numbers on the calc to make it work.
I thought it would be better to have 100% PG & 100% VG Then just follow the calc.
Just a bit leery about jacking with the #'s Don't want to get over the 36 on the nic, I like about 18 on it.

USP offers verification services for dietary supplement finished products, dietary ingredients, and pharmaceutical ingredients. Products and ingredients that meet all USP verification requirements—including a GMP audit, product and ingredient testing, and manufacturing documentation review—are awarded use of the distinctive USP Verified Marks (pictured below). Participation is voluntary and available to manufacturers worldwide.

USP's verification services draw upon USP's experience of nearly 200 years in setting federally recognized public standards of quality for medicines and, more recently, dietary supplements, that are used today in more than 140 countries.

Because you are using 36mg and cutting it to 18mg, there is not much room to adjust the PG/VG ratio and adding flavoring adds PG to the mix.
With a higher strength Nic, more PG/VG is needed to cut it down to 18mg so Ratio flexibility is greater
If you buy a 36mg, get it with the PG/VG ratio closes to your needs taking into consideration the amount of PG based flavoring you are adding. You can use the calculator to figure out what you need.

SORRY Breaktru, Guess I am not being clear enough again.
I have the base that is mixed at 50/50 with no nic.
Then I have nic at 48......not 36
I said that I did NOT want to go over the 36 line that makes it to high, toxic.
I was just saying I would rather have the PG & VG separate so I did not have to jack with the calc numbers & get something wrong.
just a bit leery still about getting the nic to high. Just trying to be very careful on that.
I am guessing if you dont put any nic in it the rest is next to impossible to screw up.

Another ? for you Breaktru,
I am still looking for the right nic....I just looked at some...did not get that it is VG or PG based also
Woundering what one to get and how that works in the calc....don't see how you would seperate it in the calculation?
as far as I see that is what the nic strength e-Juice is at the top of the calc.
So if say I got VG nic I would Put 0% in the PG in that line  .... ie: nic strength e-Juice

Did you look at the pdf file? SEE HERE
I thought it would explain a lot.
Tell me what strength nic and what ratio you are looking for and I'll post a link to it.

Ya, forgot about it (PDF) think I got it.
I was looking at the 100mg
Can get it with VG or PG what ever I want to order.
So if I  say  get the PG then I would put 100 in the PG space and the VG would go to 0
Thanks Again

I would suggest the 100mg in 50/50 like shown HERE
Also pick up a bottle of VG and a bottle of PG

So do I have this right now
I want the PG/VG Base not mixed  ie: a bottle of PG & a bottle of VG  No Nic, No Flav
But then I want the Nic mixed 50PG/50VG & 100mg   No Flav
Then the Flav 100% PG   No Nic
Then I can just put the numbers in the calc. & mix to the numbers it puts out at the bottom
Is there anything I am missing
lot of pitfalls

When you get all your DIY supplies and are ready to mix. Post what you have and what you want the recipe to end up as and someone here can post an image of the calculator with all the settings needed. I think a picture is clearer than the text.

Guess I also did not say I had already made the order for the one with just the PG
What I don't understand is, if you wanted a 50/50 final ratio of PG/VG, why would you buy Nic with 100% PG?

The site I was looking at only had 100% PG or 100% VG
I am new to the mixing your own thing and did not relize that the calc was set up for 50/50 nic
I guess for the same reson I ordered the first batch of base already mixed 50/50
Then found out I needed the PG VG at 100% each so I could follow the calc

So that did not answer my qustion

Right now I have the base VG/PG mixed at 50/50
and the Nic is 50/50 and 48mg
The flav is 100% PG
I want 20% flav 18mg nic and 50/50 PG/VG

Sorry Breaktru did not see this till now....sometimes when I get an e-mail letting me know someone answered me and use the link to see the reply,
I can not find it, this was one of those times.
Not done a lot of the forums so not totaly up to speed on them either
I was just useing the e-mail link and posting where it took me
Not sure where I am suppose to post so maybe instead of Convincing anyone or getting bad replies (like the one earlier today not this one)
I should just admit this maybe over my head.

No problem Sky I totally understand. I separated the topics. What happened was that right after splitting the topic off for you the auto email notifications was still pointing to the original topic. If it happens again, just take note of the topic subject before posting. Thanks

The calculator is NOT set for 50/50 nic. You enter PG/VG that the Nic is.
On the first line: If you have Nic with all PG then enter 100%PG, 0%VG and 48mg
The next line below you enter what you want to dilute it to so enter 18mg

On the flavoring 1 line: If you are using one flavor at 20%, enter 100%PG, 0%VG and 20%
Down below about mid way on the calc you will see two boxes to enter what you want your recipe to be for PG and VG.
If you like it at 50/50 than enter 50 in the PG% box and 50 in the VG% box.

You have Nic that is 48mg and  50/50 or 100% PG ?
You have a bottle of PG/VG that is mixed together at 50/50 ?
You want 20% flavoring?
You are making 10ml of it?
If so, this is how you enter it. Take note that the final out come for the  PG/VG ratio. You will then combine the total ml so that you will add 4.24ml of your 50/50 PG/VG bottle.
First attached image is 100% PG and the second image is 50/50

I love this calculator, but I have a question.
I've been using the E-Juice Me Up to DIY. Today, I decided to check out the "20" drops per ml that's on there automatically.
Going by drops, using the bottles that I drop from ... I got PG at 23 drop per ml, VG at 14 per, and the flavoring at 32 per.
I'm surprised I haven't poisoned myself ... other than it went the other way and cut the nic way down, also the flavoring. (thought it was my taste buds still outta whack)
So, I can use syringes to measure ... but... how do I use the calculator now.
I'm wondering if I have to plug in each count separately , take a reading for each PG?VG?flavoring .
I could print out one for the PG count to start with, change the "count per ml" amount for the VG to get the right calculation , and then do it again for the flavoring.
I could then cross out the wrong count on the original for each. ....
Even using a syringe, I would have to have a correct ml count for each one wouldn't I ??
How do you guys do it when the counts per ml are all different ???
Thanks for any info.

I would avoid using drops. A syringe is the best method

I mentioned this in several Topics and Posts. Do Not Use Drops. It is highly UN-accurate. Use a syringe or graduated cylinder to measure milliliters.

A ml is a ml no matter what viscosity the liquid is. Regardless if you are measuring 1 ml of the thickest Honey or measuring 1ml of water it's still 1 ml in volume. It's like the question: which weighs more, a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks.
If the recipe calls for 1 ml of PG then fill the syringe to the 1 ml mark and so on...

My bet is that unless they say it is 99.9% pure they are talking about 100mg per ml.   But if it is pure don't mess with it.   Pure Nicotine had to be used in a Lab environment in a vented chamber.  Just opening it in a room with out a respirator on can make you sick and prolonged exposure could kill.  Nicotine is a toxin.   The people that work with it wear respirators,  bio hazard suits gloves etc.  It's dangerous.

Hello to all.

I'm new to diy, I just downloaded the calculator and am confused about the nicotine ejuice in the final calculated window. I buy my nicotine mixed with my PG, I buy 100% PG in a 60ml bottle at 100mg nic level. I am confused about the final calculation. It says.

Nicotine Ejuice 2.4 ml
PG 0.9 ml
VG 6 ml

I am making a 40pg 60vg ratio. What I don't understand it says to add 2.4 ml Nicotine and I don't understand since my Nicotine is already mixed in with my 100% PG in a 60ML bottle. Please help. Thanks

Hi boatanchor, Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new found hobby of DIY.

I ran your numbers into the calculator and it looks like you are using 7% PG flavoring, a 10ml total mix and diluting the nic from 100mg to 24mg.

Because we are only adding 2.4ml of 100% PG nic to a volume of 10ml, we need to maintain the 40/60 ratio by adding the 0.9ml of PG

Thank's  Breaktru for getting back to me so quickly. I think I follow what your saying, So just measure out the 2.4ml out of the 100% PG Nic mix and then just measure out the additional 0.9ml out of the 100% PG nic?

Wouldn't it be safe to say that I can just add the two together 2.4ml + 0.9ml = 3.3ml total?

No not really. Follow the calculator results exactly. You are also adding in VG and flavoring.

Here is how I set the calculator up.
Nicotine Strength E-juice PG 100%  VG 0%  100mg
Nicotine Strength 24mg
Amount To Make 10ml
water/Vodka/PGA 0%

My Flavorings as as follows

Peppermint 1%
Menthol       2%
Kollada        2%
Sweetener    2%
Target PG 40%    Target VG 60%

I come up with Nicotine E-Juice 2.4ml
PG 0.9ml
VG  6ml
Peppermint 0.1ml
Menthol 0.2
Koolada 0.2
Sweetener 0.2

So like I was saying my Nicotine and PG are in the same bottle which is a 60ML bottle 100% PG 100MG Nicotine... Nothing else I have has any PG in it at all, So I need to buy just a plain bottle of PG to get my 0.9ml from? And I want to thank you for all your help and advice its greatly appreciated. Thanks

Question: Is it store bought unflavored nic 100% PG base or did you doctor it up with more PG?

Yes you need a bottle of PG so you can add 0.9ml and a bottle of VG to add 6ml

Hi xbt26 and welcome to the forum.
So you have 100ml of 35% PG / 65% VG. What mg Nic strength is it?

Hi xbt26 and welcome to the forum.

See: HOW TO

i have a separate 10ml of 100mg nic. the ready mix doesn't have nic. below is the list of ingredients that i have bought:
100ml Readymix (65%VG/35%PG)
6ml Sweetener
6ml Tart & Sour
10ml 100mg nic

i'm not sure where to put the readymix value on e-juice me up application

I have been using this calculator for sometime now and know it pretty good but I think using a ready mix PG/VG would be difficult to use without doing some manual calculations. I think most people buy PG and VG separate so you can custom make your PG/VG ratio to your liking.
You can use the ready mix by looking at the calculator results for how much PG and VG to add and sum the two numbers up then add that amount of ready mix. You target PG/VG ratio would need to be manually figured out. Not sure how to do that.

You did not mention what PG/VG ratio your Nic is. Adding flavoring/sweetener is usually PG based so that also need to be accounted for when added because that plays in to your final PG/VG target ratio. Looks like a tough way of doing things using a ready mix.

Yes Jo is correct. Add up the PG and VG that the calc came up with and add that much of ready mix.
Here is an example of what's going on.
Say you are making a 10m batch of eJuice
and let's say your 100mg Nic is 50/50 PG/VG,
Let's say you want your ejuice to be 18mg in strength
and you want 20% flavoring.
You final result PG/VG ratio (Target) will be 50.7 PG / 49.3 VG as shown in the example images below (click to enlarge)....

The error is a Windows operating system protection.

Work around:
Right Click the "eJuice Me Up" icon or program link and then click "Properties",
Click on the "Compatibility" TAB and
check the box "Run this program as an Administrator".
