What new features are added to the DNA30? Why is it special?

So far the only spec released was an increased wattage limit 30 watts and fires subohm (vaperjoes leaked that much)

hai breaktru!!

It's going to be fun to be a beta tester again.

Evolv is def stepping up its game.  The sub-ohmers, I'm thinking, are going to be quite happy with the 10A, 30W of the DNA30.  Crazy insane that stuff is.  :yes"

Hey mamu and welcome to the forum.
Yeah, the 30w will make them happy. I wonder what the consumer price will be and if it is the same size board and display as the 20w.
We will probably see it soon. Last year I received it on Dec 8th.

My understanding is that it is the same size board and same display with the 30W having a few different components.

Don't know when we'll get it in our hands or what the price will be.  Brandon did say that the 20D will be retired, but I told him I hope not.  I do like the cushion of higher max limits and better efficiency though with the 30W.  I personally will never be maxing it out lol.

I had concerns about a boost converter pushing a single batt to 10A.  I asked Brandon about the safety features and he told me the DNA30, as well as the DNA20D, won't fire if all conditions regarding the stability of the batt - load, capacity, etc - aren't met.  So that was good news.

Hi Mamu, welcome to the forum, your reputation precedes you :)

The sub-ohmers, I'm thinking, are going to be quite happy with the 10A

That would make it a DNA40 wouldn't it?  Minimum for a boost converter is 4 Volts.  Unless of course the DNA30 is buck-boost.  30 Watts at 4.0V is 7.5 Amps allowing a minimum atomizer resistance of just over a half Ohm.  For boost only, you can take advantage of power losses in the circuit and allow voltage to sag with heavy loads to get more current output, but that's a cheat really, not something I would do myself.

I can tell you I have my hands full attempting to design a buck-boost converter than can do 40 Watts across the full range and that's with 3 times the PCB space and a 20 Amp non-removable battery.  Definitely not an easy thing to do.  A 30W buck-boost converter the same size as the DNA20 would be quite an accomplishment.

The battery is a big consideration when you get into those high power levels.  A 30 Watt output is going to be about 36 Watts to the battery when you allow for losses in the circuit.  At a minimum battery voltage of 3 Volts, that's 12 Amps on the battery.  With those high currents you can get into issues with power loss at the battery connections and in the battery itself.  It's why I always use non-removable cells in my mods.  That batteries are soldered-in to eliminate those contact losses.

These guys running half Ohm atomizers with mechs are getting a ton of voltage sag.  I would imagine they're only seeing about 3.2V at the atomizer.  Not the case when you use a converter since it compensates for losses.  There's a world of difference driving a half Ohm atomizer at 4.0V versus 3.2V, that's 32 Watts versus 20 Watts.  That's how it works with power, it's proportional to the square of voltage.

I myself have that issue with power disparity when running a 1/2 Ohm atomizer using my own boost only mods.  When it says 4 Volts, it's delivering 4V to the atomizer and it's stinking hot.  With the same atomizer on a mech, power is considerably lower.  That's my motivation for doing a buck-boost mod, to get voltage low enough to run atomizers well under a half ohm.

Good point, Craig.  I had spaced the min 4V from the boost converter.  Was only looking at higher amps and higher watts with the DNA30.

There will most likely be people, like I did until you reminded me, thinking this DNA30 because of its higher amps and watts will be a go for sub ohm vaping without realizing the min 4V capability.  Wait for it wait for it - it will happen.

Evolv will be releasing a buck-boost module, but it's not the DNA30 and it's not power packed for sub-ohmers.

...That's my motivation for doing a buck-boost mod, to get voltage low enough to run atomizers well under a half ohm.

Will be looking forward to how that works out.

Do you do sub-ohm vaping, Craig?  For me it's more of a curiosity as I think it's crazy insane, but I do respect everyone's right to do it, and hopefully - for everyone to do it safely.  I hear it's pretty big on the west coast.  I am curious as to the generation of sub-ohmers.  Are they the younguns or are there people of my generation (i.e., old ) doing it.

For me, I don't need to push clouds.  I just want a satisfying replacement for ciggies, so I'm in my happy zone with my gear at this time.

Isn't the Kick already buck-boost?  That one is good for 15 Watts.  If so, it should be able to go down to half Ohm already.

The difference is that guys using really low resistance atomizers with mechs are hitting power levels as high as 40 Watts.  The highest I've vaped with is 36 Watts since that's the most my mods can put out.  For some atomizers that's way too hot, but the multi-coil rebuildable ones can do it without issue.  Though in all honesty, I don't vape with more than 20 Watts regularly, usually around 17.

But yeah, I could get by just fine with a 20 Watt mod.  However, I do like to experiment with high power levels.  I guess it's a "push the envelope" kind of thing.

My wife has been vaping with 7 or 8 Watts for several years and she's perfectly happy with that.  She tried using one of my little boxes for a bit, but it was too powerful for her with the 4.0V bottom end so she went back to her eGos.  So, a secondary motivation is to build one that can run below 4.0V for my wife to use.

If I run some 26ga then maybe a push up to 30watts lol.  whoa thats hot

Woot the supreme mod goddess, hi Mamu

Wondering if you have any pictures of your new dna creation you spoke of being the smallest build yet .

Yes, I do have it done - 2" in height and with 1500mAh, but  I don't want to off-topic breaktru's thread with my mods.  And I definitely don't want to step on toes as I'm not sure what's what with breaktru's wishes, so will wait til I hear from breaktru if it's ok to start a thread with it.

I'm sure you can start a thread about your mod, that's kind of the point of this forum, to show off your builds.  In any, case, 1500mAh and 2" tall, that's impressive.  The best I can do is 1400mAh and 3-1/4" tall.

The only way I can tolerate high wattage is using heavier Kanthal like 28ga. What gauge are you using Craig?

Welcome Mamu :) Glad to see you here!

I never got into the sub-ohm vaping thing.  I've got a couple rebuildables but I'd rather fiddle with creating a mod than building coils.  I'm afraid my vaping habits are pretty vanilla.....2.0ohm Boge carto's in a tank at 8 or 9 watts.  It's been that way for almost 2 years and I always end up back there.

The Potential of the DNA30 is awesome but if I was ever to build something with one it would never have to work too hard. lol

Looking forward to Breaktru's and Mamu's DNA30's!

I use a .4 x.1mm Kanthal D ribbon.  In terms of cross sectional area, that would be like 30 gauge round wire.  I do sleeve my mesh wicks with silica (or Nextel) and they seem to be able to handle power more gracefully than a bare metal wick.  With a bare metal wick, I can't go much above 15 Watts, but I can take it to the limit with the sleeved wick.  Don't know why that is, but that's how it works out.  My atomizer builds can run comfortably up to 25 Watts, but I'm usually running 17 Watts or maybe 20 if I'm feeling the need for it.

Holy cow craig your flling auditoriums with that kinda of vaping
never vape mango, everyone asks do you smell urine after a vapor cloud of it..
My butterscotch was pretty rancid as well like b.o..

I personally like bare oxidized ss mesh/cable but as I go up in watts I also find that it shorts the coil
and no amount of oxidizing stops it.  so what i do is make the wick a smaller diameter then coil and use fluffed cotton on it.
it is in testing stage actually as I have had some issues but when it singes the cotton just right whoa great flavor and quick feed coil

I can dial in a wattage that is double my normal vape by using 28ga. Normally I use 32ga at 8 watts. But with 28ga I use 15 to 17 watts and performs equally to my 32ga 8watt.
I use 500 SS mesh and swipe it lightly over cotton to cover it with just a hint of cotton. So far this is the best setup that I have used and believe me I tried everything out there. I mean everything. I'm not putting down what others used. If it works for you, then so be it. It's just my experience with what "I" used.
