Battery orientation question
« on: September 26, 2014, 11:05:24 AM »
Hi all! So I've been looking at box mods, both commercial and DIY to get ideas and how to knowledge. Is there a reason why the positive battery contact is put on the bottom of the mod during construction? When the battery is placed it is upside down and I wondered at the reason why.

If there is a reason it would be beneficial to know for my mod construction.

Thanks in advance!

I'm hoping to make a DNA 30, would that be a a factor in orientation? Otherwise I'll just go with my gut and place it right side up!

Someone on another forum pointed out a reason for an upside down battery - in case of venting. That is a very good argument...

My batt will be upside down, that's because I'll hook the - wires to the aluminum box to reduce the amount of wire in there and with the orientation of the DNA chip it'll be the shortest path between the two for power.

That would be asdaq. Also a member here. Sounds reasonable.
Also consider where your vent holes are in the mod such as the usb jack and other case cuts are.

I have put them positive down of the three box mods I've done and on the latest one it has the benefit that I used a piece of circuit board running the width of the top with the 510 bolted through it and a hot spring soldered to it giving a very good negative path between the battery and atty without using any wire.

That's great!  I wish I knew more about electronics to do something like that.

Also consider where your vent holes are in the mod such as the usb jack and other case cuts are.

Yes consider the pressure relief vent for round cells is under the positive terminal.  It's always best to have an unobstructed path to external vents adjacent to the positive cell terminal(s).  Though for box mods it's usually not a big concern since they may have magnetic doors or other escape paths.  It's a big consideration for tube mods.  There was an incident recently where someone was injured when a battery failed and the vents did not relieve pressure due to bad location;
