Just got a PTN04050C and have ??
« on: January 17, 2012, 09:26:30 PM »
Just got it and was wondering  how to do a straight up 5v. just wondering  which slots to use resistors and do  I need  a NC switch or just any momentary switch.

I have been looking for directions but the only ones I find are for VV and for this I just want to do 5v.

Thanks in advance.

Just leave the adjustment Pin 3 empty for 5 volts.
You need a N.O. Switch. (Off-Mon)

Thank you.

So I would run it bat to chip then chip to switch then atty?

As far as I know the capacitors are used in this circuit to take the initial load off the battery thus lengthening battery life. So I would put them in. The circuit looks good to me, but I don't use the 4050 since I got two bad ones in a row. Breaktru, Craig and Doc Dave are the 4050 experts.

The input capacitor is required to smooth supply power since load on the battery changes drastically as the converter pulses its inductor on and off at  high frequency.  Input voltage fluctuates as load changes due to the battery's internal resistance.  The switching regulator's controller chip needs a clean supply to work properly.

The output capacitor acts like a tank or reservoir to smooth the pulsed output to DC.  The regulator's controller needs a clean output to work properly as well..

Without the capacitors, you don't have a DC-DC converter (switching regulator).  The input and output capacitors are always required.

Both the input and output capacitors need to meet specifications stated in the data sheet for the regulator to remain stable under all conditions.  This is a design characteristic of any DC-DC converter.

People that claim improved battery life with one capacitor or another are probably encountering instabilities when using capacitors that don't meet specifications stated in the data sheet.  Instabilities can greatly reduce efficiency.  When efficiency is low, power is wasted and battery run time can be greatly reduced.

DZ,  put the SWITCH between battery and input of DC-Conv. (pin 2)
You have the Conv always powered.

Yes G, I do.
I usually use an On/Off coming off the (-) battery and a P.B. coming off the (+) battery terminal.
That's me. I like to isolate the battery from possible unnecessary drain.
The On/Off is your choice. It's not necessary but another precaution if sticking the mod in your pocket and accidentally firing it off... Ouch!
I've omitted it in a few w/ touch sensors or a mod that is too big to stuff in a pocket or purse.

How's it going everyone I'm new here   :D
So I want to be exact on the parts list for this mod and here's what I got
1-3amp NO switch
1-on/off switch
2-100uf 10v caps
"NO" Resistors
1-4050c chip
1-Atty connection

I'm more concerned about the caps and resistors then the rest.
But if you guys don't mind me asking what would the caps and resistor be for a adjustable 4050c
1-100uf 16v electrolytic cap
1- 180uf 25v electrolytic cap
1-250k ohm pot trimmer
"NO" Resistors
and is 4050cad and 4050cah the same chip and wired the same LOL
Sorry everyone

Looks good! You won't need resistors if your are going to just boost to 5v  :rockin smiley: :rockin smiley:

What I understand from your Schematic compared to this one is;
Still includes 2 100uf 10v Electrolytic caps
Instead of 100K and a10K resistor you went with 15K and a 4.7K resistor.
same 100k pot

I am looking to come up with the same voltage as you had on your updated schematic 3.7ish v to 6.0ish v
Now this is were my limited to no electrical knowledge butts in.
Are the resistors 1/8W or 1/4W or one or the other? And why?
For the caps should I stay with the 10uf 10v or 100uf 25v, 50v, 180uf, and so on? So confused  >:(
I have tried reading data sheets and also reading on how to come up with those core values and it escapes me totally.
Hand me a tool and I will build :)
Hand me a Book and I will ask what is a book :( LOL

Ahhhh, finally someone has been paying attention. Great IZ, thank you for that.

Okay, the resistor wattage does not effect how the out come will turn out. The minimum as per datasheet is 0.1w (1/10w) so by using the smallest available you can condense the size. I would look for 1/8 w as it is half as small as the 1/4 w. (the resistors are in a LOW current portion of the circuit)
Also try to find 1% tolerence, no more than 5%, as that will effect the output voltage result.

The caps, I never mentioned 10uf, I'm sure you typed it in error.
Rule of thumb: Cap voltage should be twice the size of the voltage going thru it. Your using a 4.2v batt at max so 10v input cap is sufficient and 16v cap at output (6.1v). To make things simple go w/ both caps the same voltage rating. note: I've used 10v with no problems so suite your self here. 10v caps are physically smaller than 16v caps.
The data sheet also shows Panasonic 180uf's in there list of caps. I have them but are way to Large in physical size.
Try to find LOW ESR caps at 100uf, 16v or 10v.

See the thing is over the last few weeks I have probably sifted through a few hundred maybe even 1k posts so at this point it all kinda blurs to me. The rules and what to use change several times through many posts. Getting help here is a lot easier then ECF, you ask a question and they give you a half ass answer then make you feel like an idiot when you respond wrong. So with that said thank you Breakthru and others here for the help and info.

I know exactly what you mean DZ.
There are only a handful of ECF modders who really know what's going on with a particular circuit. The rest are newbee modders. 98% of them approached me for circuit info but their translation of a circuit may or may not be correct.

Also, when researching any particular thread on a circuit/mod, always read through to the end. Either here or any forum as circuit modifications do occur and parts and out come do change.

Thank you so much Breaktru I would have never been able to figure that out alone. Me and Dz have been chatting back and forth trying to figure this stuff out together because he was the only one on ECF willing to help with this 4050c issue. So a huge Thank you to you Dz :) The research is finally over now all there is budget and buy THEN THE BUILD WOOHHOOOOO!!!! Can't wait to update you fella's on the build but it might be a while LOL
Okay so here is my parts list for the 4050c adj :
2 100uf 16v Low ESR caps   I'll take the chance with 16v size for caps shouldn't be a huge issue for me.
1 15K 1/8 1%  resistor (Pin3 to Pin4)
1 4.7K 1/8 1% resistor (Pin3 to Trimmer)
1 100K Trimmer (Pin1 to 4.7 Res to Pin3)
= 3.7ish v to 6.0ish v range
FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!
Thank you again fella's and see now that I have the picture in my head it's all starting to make sense.
