I am buying a South Bend 9x36 metal lathe. I will among other things be producing hybrid mods.

Oooh, I'm jealous
It's funny, I've been a woodworker for all but 10 years of my life and have only dreamed of owning a metal shop. I'm even jealous of myself.

I've always wondered if there's a quick/easy way to convert a wood lathe to a metal lathe.  I mean you have everything you need, wouldn't you just need a metal lathe tool rest?  And of course, I think a metal lathe has a slower RPM than a wood lathe, I think my Delta only goes down to 250RPM.  Suppose that could be altered by using different pulleys...A Nova DVR goes down to 100RPM, but it's direct drive also.

Just wondering...:)

Jeweler's lathes are kind of like metal lathes but with a wood lathe tool rest. The major differences between a metal lathe and a wood lathe is that a metal lathe is designed to deal with the forces behind what the tool is doing. In wood, you cut the material down. In metal you actually tear the metal rather than cut it so there are extreme forces behind nearly every operation.

I got the lathe, it turned out to be 48" long. I am still working on getting all of the tools I need and building knowledge. I will be in production no later than the end of November. I'm not rushing this or cutting any corners.
