attached is my poor paint skills. what am i doing wrong. here. I can do a dna no problem. this one has me beat. sad thing is its a repair from a poorly made mod.

Looks okay. Just verify that turning the trimmer pot clockwise, decreases ohmage. Otherwise you will have to swap end pins on the trimmer.

I only get battery voltage when wired like that. Hmmm..

Thoroughly check over your wiring and integrity of the solder connections. If it is absolutely correct then it maybe you have a bad board. Too much heat when soldering can damage a board.
Another note: Never fire up the board without some sort of a load.

what is the easiest way to put a load on this just put a carto in tne atty connection??

Is it in a mod? or a breadboard?
If it's in a mod then yes use the carto in the 510 connector.
If it's in a breadboard use two 20ga pigtail wires with alligator clips on the ends and put a piece of kanthal/nichrome wire across the alligator clips. This way you can test various load ohmage.

thanks Breaktru. Im gonna pull it all the way aprt and start over. what is the max voltage these boards can put out?? I have had this one at 15V is that right??

The datasheet shows the max voltage at 15v. 60 ohm from ground to pin 3.
Voltage output depends on your Set-Point Resistor Value
Look over the datasheet

Can 1/2w 5% resistors of the same value be used? Or do they have to be 1/8w 1% resistors.

The adjustment portion of the circuit is low current. A minimum wattage is 0.1W (1/10). Yes you can use 1/2W but it is physically larger. Like 4 times the size of a 1/8W.
using 1% will give you a more precise result. You can use 5% but your output maybe not what you expect. If you have a bunch of 5% resistors you can measure them w/ your ohmmeter and try to find something close to the value you need.

Hi guys, i'm a total newb and I'm putting one of these together too. I know this topic is a few days old but I was just looking at it and I thought that the 4.7k resistor went between the pot and the #3 pin on the TI board. In the pic posted above it looks like its shown between the pot and the connection to ground. Like I said, I'm a total newb so take everything I say with a grain of salt!

The 4.7k is in series w/ the 100k pot and is wired between pin 3 of the board and ground/battery negative.
It doesn't matter which end connects to ground or Pin 3 as long as they are in series.

Alright guys I revisited this project repair with a new board and still can't get it to go variable. Is there anybody out there willing to help me out that I could send the components too?? My buddy bought an Shute to tide himself over till I can get this thing bak to him. Any help is much appreciated..

How many turns is that adj. maybe you have to turn it a million times to get it to move.
Also per the spec sheet your caps work best when mounted just off the board, IDK if it makes that much difference but I personally am not willing to find out.
Really well done though.. Hope you git r dun.
Wait a minute I thought ground went to center leg on the adj you have it on the wiper leg..

If you got the board as a sample from TI...they sometimes send out defective boards.

Like @Visus mentioned, it looks like a multi-turn trimmer pot. It would require many turns to see an output change.
A lighter gauge Neg wire can be used at the trimmer.
Hvy wires (20ga) should be from the batt to the board and from the board to the 510 connector. All other wires can be lighter gauge.
The photo doesn't show all your connections past the board.

is there a better trimmer pot to use for this. this one take forever to go from top to bottom. and yes it is now working.. :) I just would like to it to have a shorter turn needed to go from lowest to highest.

I picked up some of these (http://www.mouser.com/Murata/Passive-Components/Potentiometers-Trimmers-Rheostats/Trimmer-Resistors-Through-Hole/_/N-9q0ytZscv7?P=1z0zlftZ1yzuvtn) and they're really nice. They're 6mm square so they're much smaller than the more common 10mm ones. Also they're 12 turn instead of the typical 19 or 25 turn of the 10mm ones. Looks like they're available in a wide range of resistances.

I like the 3362 models they swing the v's right IMO but you have to be gentle with the screwdriver or chance striping the phillips adjuster..
I get's tired of twisting the multi's
