Title: How to Solder SMT fuses together?
Post by: bamani71 on November 21, 2014, 09:01:09 PM
Hi All,

I had seen a picture of two tiny smt fuses soldered together (by Mamu, I think?) and I wondered if you could tell me how?  I just kind of burned mine...

Pretty sure Mamu jut uses a drop of super glue to glue them down then solders.

I'll try that.  I'll also try my new clamps, hopefully they'll hold the fuses nicely and I can get them together.  It would be lovely to use those instead of the giant through hole fuses.

I'm not familiar with the particular PTC fuses and assume you are fitting them in-line, never seen the point as only built DNA mods, but soldering 101: start with a good mechanical connection before applying solder (conductiveish glue). So if you can wrap/twist wires, legs together so they stay firmly connected before you solder you will get the best electrical joint, PITA to dismantle which is why most don't bother, it's up to the designer what's more important in any project ;), but if carrying high current I would want the best connection myself.

They're talking about these;

When I solder components like that together (I do it with SMD caps sometimes as well), I use Kapton tape to hold them together for soldering.  The problem with glue is you can easily get it on the contacts which would degrade the connection quality since solder won't stick there.

No I don't use super glue to hold fuses, or caps, together.

For parallel smd fuses or parallel smd caps I hold together with tweezers, then apply a dab of solder to each end.

For parallel leaded fuses, or parallel leaded caps, I use Kapton tape to hold them together, then apply a dab of solder to each end.

How do you do it? When I try the fuse turns brown before it gets hot enough to melt the solder....

Apply a dab of flux to the end of the fuse before soldering.  Then a quick swipe with the iron with solder across the end.

clamp them gently in forcept and solder one end and tin the on lead and just melt the joint and flip it over and do the other side the forceps act as a heat sink to prevent over heating.
