Title: Regulators for PV use - Linear vs Switching for Mod Building
Post by: Breaktru on November 26, 2010, 08:03:30 PM
Want to add a regulator to your mod?
Most mod builders use a Linear Regulator. The problem is Linear Regs are not very efficient. Efficiency is 14% to 40%. Even the new LDO's. Sure they are cheap and very popular but cause additional battery drain.
Solution, go with a Switching Regulator. Efficiency is 85-95%.

See more details: Beginner's Guide to Switching Regs (http://www.dimensionengineering.com/switchingregulators.htm)

No additional circuits to wire: 25 Watt Regulator (http://www.dimensionengineering.com/DE-SWADJ3.htm)
This is good if you don't want to add the additional capacitors, resistors and potentiometer.

I ordered this one as a FREE sample: http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/lit/getliterature.tsp?genericPartNumber=ptr08100w&fileType=pdf
This one is 96% efficient but requires 2 capacitors and 1 variable and fixed resistor.

I used the FREE sample switching regulator in my 7.4v Copper mod. See the end of the Copper Mod Thread for details.
This is the regulator I used: http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/lit/getliterature.tsp?genericPartNumber=ptr08100w&fileType=pdf (http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/lit/getliterature.tsp?genericPartNumber=ptr08100w&fileType=pdf)

I'm gonna try my first VV using a 350T .. got a bunch of them real cheap so what the heck! I'm saving my TI modules for the "gold standard" and I'm not there yet

Smart move Alan, don't want to waste my TI modules either until I know I have a winner ready for it to go into.
What's the 350T? is it a Linear Reg chip?

It's a LM350T .. 3 amp linear variable reg .. got a dozen for less than a 10-spot .. thinking about teaming it up with a p-channel fet for touch capabilities.

I know your mods are WAY more sophisticated, just looking for an inexpensive VV that'll fit in a 3-AA box. If it doesn't work, I'm not out anything (that's the way I look at it anyway). After all, it's just a hobby for me :)

Just wired in a P-Channel touch for the side x side.
Waiting on a 1/4 x 40 tap so I can finish it up.
Alan, I've seen your mods and think they are fantastic. Keep up the great work. You have a great collection of unique designs that you have created.

I found this $3.15 regulator but not sure if it can handle the atty current:
Best part, it is Pulse Width Modulation

LM3224
615kHz/1.25MHz Step-up PWM DC/DC Converter

Yup, that's the one. Thanks for the link, now that I have a schematic to work with, it should be a piece of cake :)

Poorvari .. catchy name  ;D

There are so many switching regulators but I see most are using the PTR08100w and the booster PTN4050c

Cool info guys
Just found the link for TI's FREE samples of the 08100w and the 04050c.
Thank you very much. I was using those non efficient HOT linear's.
I think I'm going to disassemble my mods and put the switching regs in.
