Title: Castle Long
Post by: CrustyOldFart on October 25, 2015, 05:06:54 AM
Hello everyone.  Not sure where to put this, my first post, but just want to say that I'm brand new to DIY e-juicing and discovered this e-juice calculator from one of the e-cig or DIY forums.  Don't remember which one since I went into a frenzy researching how to do it, but I'm so glad I found your calculator.  It's the first an only one I've used, an excellent tool and for me was very intuitive and I picked up exactly how to use it within a few minutes.  Thank you so much for sharing this great piece of software.

I made my first batch of a Five Pawns Castle Long Clone last week and just made another batch tonight.  I found the recipe on another forum so I hope it's okay to talk about clones here.  According to the poster who developed the recipe, it's not really a clone but something very similar.  So my new bottles are cooling in a bowl of hot water as I type this.  Somewhere on this forum, I think, I found a recommendation to put the newly mixed bottles in a bowl of just boiled water.  I took the bowl of water out of the microwave, let it sit a minute or two so it wasn't still boiling and then put my juice bottles in.  Temp was just over 150-degrees F a few minutes later when I initially put my thermometer in the bowl with the bottles and cooling now into the 120s degree F right now.

For those that may not be familiar with Castle Long, it's a Kentucky Bourbon based liquid with toasted almond, coconut, brown sugar and two kinds of vanilla.  I got hooked on it a few months ago and has been my ADV for a while now.  It's been said that Castle Long is similar to The Steam Company's Gentlemen's Reserve, but I've not tried that one.  Five Pawns is based in Southern California where I'm from, and The Steam Co. is based in Connecticut, so it may be more common back east.  Five Pawns make a variety of Castle Long called Reserve that is aged for 3 weeks in oak barrels and is a very good vape, though a bit pricey, so I'm so glad I got into DIY.  I've probably made over $150 worth of liquid at retail cost for penny's on the dollar, and it's quite tasty.  Needless to say I'm so stoked.

So this is what I've got so far: one 50 ml graduated cylinder, one 150 ml beaker, one 125 ml Erlenmeyer flask, a bunch of 1 ml and 3 ml syringes with blunt tip needles, a funnel, a liter each of Kosher USP-Food Grade PG and VG, 125 ml nicotine at 100 mg strength in 50/50 PG/VG,

Anyway, I hope it's okay to talk about clone recipes here, here is what I made:

Kentucky Bourbon (TFA) 3.1%
Coconut (FlavArt) 2.3%
Toasted Almond (Capella's) 2.3
Brown Sugar (FlavArt) 0.77%
Madagascar Vanilla (FlavWest) 0.77%
Vanillin (TFA I think) 0.77% though this could be replaced with French Vanilla which I will do next time

Please let me know what you think if anyone tries this.

Thanks again, and I look forward to chatting with you all here on this great forum.

Cheers

COF:   First, welcome to our community.  We agree this is the best on the web.  Then, welcome to the DIY world.  It is fun and exhilarating and sometimes frustrating when you are trying to develop a flavor and when you try it you find it is not even close to what you were looking to create.  I have been doing this for a few years now and like helping newbies get there gear up and start flying through there new adventure.  With that in mind, I will make a couple suggestions to make your flight more fun.  First, I notice you have graduates, flasks and beakers for making very large quantities of juice.  Might I suggest you get a 5 and a 10ml graduate and a couple 20ml beakers (available on eBay for just a couple bucks) for mixing small batches you are trying to clone or develop.  Normally, you make these types of batches in 3 or 5ml quantities.  As you grow in the DYI arena, you are going to accumulate more and more different flavor concentrates and recipes and you are going to add your own touch to those recipes and to new ones that may be triggered by ads, forums, and just browsing the net.  The small beakers (5, 10, 20, & 25ml) are nice to mix in when you use the "gram" or weight means of measuring.  If you decide to try the "by weight" method, inexpensive scales are available from the Fast Tech" web site.  Just make sure to get one that measures to the third decimal place.  Mine is about 4" x 2.5" and cost about $7 or $8.

If you like tobacco vapes, here is a simple recipe for a really good tobacco vape:

    American Red  10%
    DK555  10%

DK555 is also know as Turkish tobacco.   Both of these are available on Wizard Labs site.

       Good luck and happy vaping

Thanks for the welcome, Eric.  Some good advise and I am ordering some smaller mix ware to experiment with tweaking recipes or developing my own. When I decided to go DIY I also decided that would not be purchasing retail juice anymore.  I went with a couple large batches initially using a generally community accepted recipe so that I would have a bunch of juice on hand that has a had a chance to age at least a week or two while I started to experiment with others. I'm about to make another order for a bunch more flavoring to get started on other recipes included in breakthru software while I have a good reserve of my first batches of juice aging now. It's nice having enough PG, VG and Nic on hand so I can just get favors for recipes that seem interesting to me and go for it.  DIY would not have been so easy for me without this software.  Thanks again to Breakthru!

One thing I've been thinking about is making my own magnetic stir plate, for mixing the larger batches at least. There's a bunch of DIY mix plates on YouTube from home brewers using inexpensive parts from RadioShack and recycled computer fans. This far, I've used my wife's kitchen mixer with a paddle wheel attachment that whips it up pretty good but I've read somewhere that using a high sheer method may not be best. Not sure it it really matters that much in the end though. So far, my mixes have turned out allright.

Well thanks again and happy vaping.

COF:   I can't believe you said you want to build a stirrer.  I have built 2.  The first was a single and the 2nd is a double.  I will include a picture - - - if I can remember how.  I would be more than happy to give you all the particulars.

Regardless of the size, you can find a project box the size you need on eBay, http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Plastic-Project-Box-Enclosure-Case-Electronic-DIY-4-724-x4-724-x3-543-/161751416877?hash=item25a922c02d, Jamesco, or Digikey's web site.  Then from eBay, order a 60 or 80 CFM CPU cooling fan (or 2).  Also on eBay, order a CPU cooling fan controller (Computer CPU 3 Pin Fan Cooling Speed Controller 12V DC PC Temperature Cooler  ---- http://www.ebay.com/itm/Computer-CPU-3-Pin-Fan-Cooling-Speed-Controller-12V-DC-PC-Temperature-Cooler-/161852068772?hash=item25af2293a4:g:GIgAAOSwT5tWFjsq) and at least 4 12mm x 3mm magnets (10-100pcs 12mm X 3mm Neodymium Disc Super Strong Rare Earth N50 Fridge Magnets).   In addition to a dpdt toggle switch (spst will work too), you will need a power connector (10pcs DC Power Supply Jack Socket Female Panel Mount Connector 5.5mm x 2.1mm), also from eBay.  You probably have an old AC to 12vdc adaptor from a cordless drill or something like that, but if you don't get a 12vdc, 1A adaptor.  If you choose to have indicator lights, you'll need a couple 12 volt LEDs or 5 volt and put an LED resistor in series with the positive leg of the LED.  For a little neater build, I used a terminal strip I got from Digikey.  It is a white plastic strip you can cut to however many lugs you need.

You will have to adjust the quantities if you decide to make a double (the box I gave you the numbers for is for a double.  If you do a single, just search eBay for the size you want).  The single stirrer can be built for about $15 or $16.  If you are going to need a diagram showing how to hook everything up, I will draw one and get to you.  When you get your speed controller, you will cut the connectors off and eliminate the yellow wire (that is the tach wire) on the fan.  You will bring one power lead thru the switch and to the fan and the other thru the switch (if dpdt switch is used) to the speed controller and from the center post on the controller to the fan.  That is the down and dirty wiring scheme.

If you need any further assistance, don't hesitate to ask.

             Eric

Eric, thanks for the info on the stirrer.  I've been out of it sick and busy with work but getting back to mixing up some batches again soon.  I'll PM you for details on the stirrer.

Thanks,
