My PTN04050 mod
« on: January 02, 2014, 01:22:22 PM »
First thanks to Breaktru for the info on this board and the nice clear circuit diagrams.

I wanted a small mod based around these cells:

next to an 18350 for scale.

I had some 2" mahogany plank and teak board. So I made a start

A little cutting and gluing later

510 fitted

and the pack fits snugly in there

time to trial fit the regulator and circuit board

added some routing for the touch switch

and did a bit more destruction to the outside, a couple of mm shorter than an 18650 without the base, the brass pins behind the atty hole are the touch switch

now time to start putting it all together, the negative of the 510 was a bitch to solder to, fixed everything in place with silicone glue.

finally with pot and charge board

still to do:
loads of sanding
fitting magnets to secure the base
final oil finish
stripboard diagram if anyone wants it

Yeah, looks really cool.  Wood is hard to beat, just feels really good in the hand.

What have I started!

I like wood as a material, I think it's warm and tactile, although my skills are still around woodwork class at school level. I just take it slow and steady.

My last mod - a re-homed Vamo board was wood too, but made from 3mm sheets of marine ply which allowed me to build it up in layers.

Very cool shape. Came out very well. Smart idea building in layers using marine plywood  :applaude:

The magnets arrived today

So here it is done. The flash on my phone really doesn't help do it justice. Final measurements are 66mm high x 65 long x 32 wide.

That turned out really slick, nice job!  I'm currently working on a 4050 mod and it will be in a wood enclosure as well.  Almost all of my mods are wooden except for the odd tin mod.  My daily vape right now switches between a wood DNA12 and a re-homed VV Gripper in a wood box.

Hope to see more of your wood!   scared:  lol

Cheers. It needs a bit more oiling, just one quick application which I wiped off to take those pictures. I'll coat it again and leave it to soak in overnight for the next few days.

What kind of oil are you using?  I have some Danish Oil that works nicely.

It's spray on teak oil. but I soak a rag in it and wipe it over. It's mixed with a solvent which is supposed to help it to penetrate.

Wow thats a tiny huge storage vaping unit.

Nice mod you must have huge hands
looks weirdish holding it feeling for my hand size which is mens small
but medium cause I have sausage fingers but the fingers are too long..

I may be 100% wrong on weird feeling, my best hand feeling mod is an aspirin bottle, it feels great in my hand..utility mech mod..

lol it's not that big. The Vamo based mod is just under 100 mm/4 inches tall. my hands are fairly average sized :).

Liking the bottle mod.

That enlosure looks really good, the teak stripe is super classy.

That's the one issue with box mods is the corners on the sides can be a bit uncomfortable.  Doobe's enclosure resolves that issue with the rounded end, but you're kind of forced to hold it one way all the time.  I round the corners as much as I can with my boxes, but I need the space in there so there's a limit to how much I can do that.  If I had my druthers, I'd make both sides perfectly round like that.

Thank you kindly sir.

The teak serves a purpose too, the 510 connector sits in it, but I am chuffed with how it's come out. I've oiled it some more and it's looking even better now too :D.

Rounding and space are always a trade off, the vamo mod is more rounded now than when that picture was taken, but also having a 'waist' helps how it sits in the hand.

My thinking behind this one was height reduction, I wanted something small and pocketable. I'd seen the LiPos I used before, and 3 of them gave me a guaranteed last all day device. Then I stumbled upon this site, I was going to use a kick as the regulator but the 04050 allowed me to shave a few more mm off the height and having a touch rather than mechanical switch allowed me to shave even more, plus just having to lay my finger across the deck to fire is effortless.

I also put my touch switches "on the deck".  Until you've used one like that, you don't apreciate how awesomely comfortable it is.  Of course it requires an offset connector.  You have to mount the connector toward the edge so you have a deck in the first place.

Ahh, the dreaded 510 connector insulator failure rears its ugly head.

Yes, I've been using the capacitive type for some time.  That's a feature I incorporated early in my mod building hobby.  The capacitive type work really well, but they don't have a 100% hit rate.  They probably misfire one in a thousand times.  That could be an issue with my controller though.  Otherwise, you only have to barely touch the probe to fire it and it's not heavily dependant on conductivity, though it won't fire through a glove which can be a problem.  I can see where someone might prefer the tactile feel of a mechanical switch, but touch switches are super comfortable to use so I like them for that.

The control switches I use are the tactile type and those are not on the deck, they're on the face.  It would be possible to make those touch as well, but for as little as they're used, it's just a lot easier to use a tactile switch there.  It's just the fire button that sits on the deck and is the capacitive type.

Well new bits are on the way. It's all a learning curve. I'm going to add a poly fuse too.

I took this this morning after the oil had a chance to soak in and before it all went tits up :).

All back in business :). Much improved 510 connector in there now. No poly fuse though as the ones I got were huge, lol.

I'm pretty sure it was the solvent in the oil which rotted the insulator, so no more oil. I got some beeswax and made some polish from that which also gives a nice finish so I'll be using that in future ;).

I'm working on an un-regulated mod now using 7 of the LiPos I used in this one in parallel, should be a beast :D.
