Unregulated 5400mAh 7P mod
« on: March 10, 2014, 02:29:44 PM »
I know you guys like your small regulated mods, so this one goes a bit against the grain as it's both unregulated and a bit of a monster.

It does however feature a mosfet for the high current circuit switch, so I'm hoping that will be it's saving grace :).

It all started with some of these. 18650 is for size comparison.

They turned into this little power pack

So I cut some boards and started making plans

Custom copper centre pin made from a rivet and shoulder washer to go in a cheap 510

done

The box starts to take shape

Test fitting commences - those fuses :/

USB charge point

Final size other mods for scale and yes that's my trusty Vamo :)

Done. The fuses had to go they were just too big. Now if there's a short the mosfet will blow...
Top left is the master on/off switch and top right is a fast charge port for plugging in a proper LiPo charger.

Not the most petite mod ever made

The voltage drop with 2x1 ohm coils, gotta love parallel cells.

I think you could have squeezed in 2 more batteries.
Just kidd'in. Congrats

Lol yeah without the USB charge board I probably could. It's for a guy who vapes silly low ohms. Even at 80 odd watts it's still under 5C discharge rate which means almost the entire capacity is usable. I've been 'testing' it for the past 24 hours and it's still over 4V. I reckon it would last me almost a week between charges. He'll be happy if it lasts all day ;).

Mod battery envy until charging --

Sweeeeeet   sassafrass thats a mech there..

Things that my mind says:
Why not  a pass thru if available thats like 3 different mods with those cells.

I consider big mah  @3k  That is giganticals --great for use if I was truck driver I can see the potential

What mosfet are you using?

It's definitely not the usual fare.  And yes, with that many cells paralled, the max discharge rate would be crazy high.  Though MOSFETs tend to fail short rather than open so I don't know how much protection that's going to offer.  Kind of hard to test since you have to burn parts to do it, but I probably would have at least used a fuseable link.

I'm using a pair of IRLU3114ZPBF in parallel. When I had problems with the crappy insulators in the 510 connection in my last build the first thing to go was always the mosfet and it always failed closed, so I assumed that was normal.

I intended to use fuses but they just wouldn't fit in the end.

They're 35C-70C rated cells, so yes it's quite capable of producing a ridiculous amount of current.

Did you fire-proof the wood?  :laughing2:
That's a lot of battery to use non-protected

Does coating it in homemade olive oil and beeswax polish  :stirpot: count as fire proofing? I think I may just be adding accelerants

Ok as a truck Driver I have a 2500 wat power Inverter so my mods always have batteries on the charger it also runs microwave and coffee maker. A BAM draw's attention from state troopers over the last 4 years I have been stopped 9 times and seen drug dogs two times until more cops get to know what mods are I don't use my tube mods when they are looking right at me I had a female cop stop me in Vale Co because I was using a reo mini at the time and she had no Idea what vaping was but her partner did so I was not held up to long. That's a nice idea when you are away from power or out camping for a week or maybe two. freaked_out: :)

They can fail either way, usually short, but not always.  You'd have to burn one to know for sure.  Things that fail to short are always a concern for electronics design.  That's common for capacitors.  I got bit by that once in one of my early mod designs.  Had to scrap the design because the converter had a potential fail to short, not good when using unprotected LiPos.  Problem with that was it failed to a soft short, bad enough to get things really hot, but not bad enough to trip the fuses, nasty.
