DIY eJuice Mixing
The combinations of “Do It Yourself” eliquid mixing is virtually endless.
I suggest that you start out mixing your recipes in small amounts to prevent waste.
I recommend using between 10% to 20% flavoring.  Some flavors are much stronger
than others, and should be adjusted accordingly. After tweaking the flavor percentages, you will find what tastes good to you.

To make a 1ml to sample, follow these steps:

Using a syringe or 1ml pipette, measure 0.8ml of PG or VG.  Transfer it into an empty small bottle.
The flavoring is next. Measure 0.2ml of a single flavor that you wish to test.
This sample is now 80% PG or VG, and 20% flavoring.  Cap the bottle, and shake for about 12 seconds.
You are now ready to test your sample flavor with NO nicotine.

If you find that the flavor is too strong or too weak, you will want to adjust your mixture by
adding 1 drop at a time of flavoring (if the flavor is too weak), or PG/VG if the flavoring is too strong.
Document your recipe once you feel like you have a good idea of the ratio that you want to use.
Once you feel like you have a good recipe, you are ready to measure larger amounts of liquids and use larger bottles.
I highly recommend when mixing larger batches of liquids to use my e-liquid calculator.
“eJuice Me Up” Calculator: https://ejuice.breaktru.com
Mixing multiple flavors is more of a challenge, depending on which flavors are more powerful and the desired flavor
that you wish to achieve.  I always start out with my mixed flavorings using equal parts of each flavor.

Practice makes perfect!  Work in small amounts when testing new recipes.

You may want to familiarize yourself with the settings before you begin, so look at the "How To" page
at: https://breaktru.com/smf/index.php/topic,205.0.html
Another bit of a great creation was submitted be "Epsilson" over at ECF.

Hey Dave of Breaktru, What do I need to get started?

You will need some measuring supplies.
Either/or Dropper, Small Graduated Cylinder, small graduated measuring cup, pipette, syringes.
A bottle of PG, VG, unflavored Nicotine and an assortment of flavoring.
Measuring Supplies: OneStopDIY Shop
UnFlavored Nic: FreedomSmokesUSA.com The higher the Nic Strength the longer it will last after cutting it to your desired Nic level.
Flavors: FlavourArt, Lorann's, Capella, Perfumer's Apprentice (TPA) to name a few.
Maybe some sweetener (ethyl maltol / Cotton Candy) and maybe a little PGA like EverClear 190% (Pure grain Alcohol)
And of course small bottles to put it in.

Mix small batches at first so not to waste any and for tweaking the results.

Note:
Unflavored eLiquied (Nic) in a strength of your choice. 36mg, 48mg... etc. I use 100mg and cut it down to 18mg in my recipes. What base do you want it in? PG/VG ratio. Like 100%PG or VG or 50/50(PG/VG) etc....

You will need a dilution base. That means a bottle of PG and a bottle of VG.

For measuring I prefer using a 3ml syringe with an 14 gauge blunt needle tip. The lower the gauge # tip the better for thick VG liquids.
Syringes are the most accurate for measuring. The dropper method is highly unreliable due to the different size droplets for different liquids and different type droppers. A graduated cylinder is also good but IMHO when using thick liquids some of the liquid remains inside the cylinder after pouring it out.

In my opinion, FlavourArt flavoring is best. The flavors are closest to the represented flavor name with no noticeable chemical after taste.
You should note that most flavoring is 100% PG based. So when using my calculator, the flavor PG is accounted for in the final recipe result and deducts PG from the amount of PG that needs to be added.

Works well using small quantities. Once I adjusted the recipe percentage, I saved it and made notes.
Your new version calculator has been great. Glad you added the extra features in the latest version.
Keep me posted with your added features in future versions.

I find using a graduated cylinder better for measuring pure VG as a pipette is not the best because of the thick consistency of the VG. Because of that, it's hard to get accurate measurements with the pipette. It's great though for PG.

Once I get my combination correct with small mix, I made large batches for friends and family. Your calculator has helped greatly. Also tried some of your included recipes. A couple of them I tweaked to my liking. Thanks. I checked out your on site recipe page. Good idea, I'll send you a recipe to add to your lot.

After making a strong flavored eJuice, I let it steep for about a week. I take off the bottle lid and leave it exposed to air. Certain flavors need a little less and some a little more

After I make a recipe, I shake vigorously for several minutes. And in between use I also shake.
This is how I shake my mixes:

This is from a post that I made over at ECF:

It took me a long time to find a good recipe. I've tried so many nasty ones that I almost gave up. Right now I have several good ones that weened me off of pre-mixed juices.
The juice is dead, long live the DIY juice.
Don't give up, keep on trying until you find your perfect mix.

I have several brands of concentrate flavoring and find that I like the FlavourArt the best. Mind you, this is MY favorite, to each his own.

I found that the success of a good ejuice is NOT to try to copy/recreate a vendors pre-mix ejuice but to come up with your own or a recommended recipe.

Very good advise!
As my flavoring stock dwindles, I have been reordering flavors w/ FA

I've switched from Lorann's a while ago to Flavourart and like the flavoring better. Although I have some Capella's that are pretty good.

I've been buying my Flavourart from ecigexpress.com
I think it is more natural flavoring w/ no chemical after taste like some I have tried.

if i use an 85% vg/15% de-ionised water base-how do i calculate how much 100% pg nicotine e-juice do i add to make 50 ml using the ejuicemeup calculator?
i use 54 mg strength nicotine, i want to reduce it to 24 mg-using my above-named base. So why does the calculator keep asking me to add more
pg?

It is impossible to turn 100% PG Nic into 85% VG, with 54ml to 24ml.
If you were using 100% VG Nic, yes it would be easy.
Also if you were using 100mg, 50/50 and breaking it down to 24ml, there would be more room for the conversion but not quite 85% VG if using PG flavoring.
Most flavoring is PG base so adding flavoring adds PG to the final ratio. Unless you use a VG base flavoring or Zero PG/VG flavoring.

Note:
For the Recipe results of the PG/VG ratio: 85% represents VG. Substitute the 15% PG with your De-ionized water.

If you always mix at 85% VG, then buy 100% VG nic rather than 100% PG.

Hi, again
I don't think I made myself clear last time-so I'll try again.
I have my base liquid, which I made from 85% vg and 15% de-ionised water.
I've got pg nicotine e-juice-at 54 mg strength, and I want to reduce this to 24 mg-using the above base, and end up with 50 ml.

thanks

So..... you want to turn your 54mg Nic to 24mg with the base you made to make 50ml...
You would add 22.22ml of NIC and 27.78 of your base to make 50ml at 24mg strength.

Either of the two attached methods will work. The Nic Mix (2nd one shown) takes some fiddling with numbers to arrive at the desired value.
Disregard that the 27.78ml says PG and use your 85/15 base mix.

My tip for mixing is to use a Pyrex beaker and microwave the final mix until just before boiling.  This will lessen the viscosity and allow the flavors to meld together. USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN REMOVING FROM MICROWAVE.  Heated  glycerin would burn you like hot oil.

Some first time DIY'ers are confused with measuring with a syringe. They do not understand how to interpret the markings on a syringe compared to the required result of the calculator.
The first photo shows a 3ml syringe which has markings of 0.1 ml for each line. The second shows a 5ml syringe with markings of 0.2 ml for each line.
I pointed out where 2.2 ml would be for each syringe. If the calculator shows a result of say 2.21, drop the One Hundredth, It's so tiny that it is insignificant. You may round the hundredth number if you like to 2.2. If it were 2.28, round it to 2.3 ml.

What does adding distilled water to your mix do? Example: If I want to thin out VG with water what will this do to the overall taste or makeup of the VG and the batch as a whole? My point is to end up with a higher VG with out it being so thick and hard to work with. thanks Dan

I personally have never used water to thin my VG.
If VG is hard to work with because it is thick, you may want to consider a larger needle for your syringe like 14ga or try warming it before mixing it. If you are thinning it use distilled water and start at 5%. Work up if needed. Add the water to the VG and not the mix. Some use PGA instead of water (ex: everclear). PGA has a noticeable taste while water does not.
My eJuice ratio is 50/50. Wicks good. Higher VG ratios will result in slower wicking.

I sit my bottle of VG in a pot of hot tap water for several minutes. It makes it easier to draw the VG into a syringe.

Very good Flu. Warming does make it a lot easier to work with. What I do is pour a bit iin to a smaller container and microwave it for a couple of seconds. Be careful not to get too hot.

Hi littlebit and welcome to the forum.
You put 100 in the box next to mg. 50/50 is the PG/VG percentage. So you would put 50 for PG and 50 for VG. This all goes on the first line of the calculator.

Have you tried other flavoring besides the 2 that taste soapy? If all tastes soapy it could be the Nic, VG or PG. Did you clean out the bottle before pouring in the mix? Maybe soap residue.
What company brand of flavor are they and what flavor are they?

I didnt know if you could mix the nic with both pg and vg so I mixed it with vg

the nic, VG, PG all came from RTS, and the flavor was raspberry from TFA,  and the other was wintergreen from TFA. All the bottles were new (been vaping 4 weeks) and waiting for more bottles to arrive to try more flavors

Any suggestions for a newbie :)

I bought 120ml of 100 mg nic and mixed it with 120ml of vg. i want a vape strength to be 12
I cut it so it would be safer to use
I miss understood when you said 50/50. I now understand that you used 50% VG and 50% Nic. But I need to know what the original Nic ratio was.
So you cut your Nic strength in half and doubled the amount. What was the original Nic ratio? was it 50/50? If it was 50/50 see the attached for your Nic result. Your Nic is now:
Amount: 240ml
Strength: 50mg
Nic Ratio: PG is 25% and VG is 75% (if the original nic was 50/50)

When you make your recipe you will now enter on the first line of the calc, 50mg, PG 25% and VG 75%.
The 2nd line for Target Nicotine Strength you enter 12 mg
and of course your flavoring information and percentage

I received a bottle of Black Honey Tobacco by The Flavor Apprentice the other day. It is marketed as being similar to Captain Black pipe tobacco. I've smoked Captain Black many years ago and I can tell you it is no Captain Black. I have been dying to find something like C.B. Some people claim the honey is overpowering and no tobacco taste. I find a liquorice under tone mostly.
I will have to work this flavor a bit and see what I can do to make it better. Good thing I only made 3ml @ 5%.

I have over 35 flavors to play with. I love this now I can make my Nic to the strength I like which is 10 mg. After I make a recipe, I shake vigorously for several minutes. And in between use I also shake.
This is how I shake my mixes:

You never can shake a liquid that has a viscosity much thicker than water and get it to mix.  Both VG and PG are much thicker than water.  Consequently, at the molecular level, which is where we must be with our mixing, we never succeed in mixing our juices sufficiently unless we heat them, let them stand (Steep) for a longer period of time, or shake them mechanically.  A mechanical shaker can be expensive.  Even used.  Not to mention the shipping charges.  I new that the lab shakers were no more the an orbital device as apposed to a rotational device.
so, I said to myself: Self what do you have or can get for cheap, that is orbital.  And self, being smarter than me, came back with . . . . . . an orbitial car waxing buffer.  That is what is shown in the pictures above.  About $10 bucks and it works like a champ.  Set your bottle or cylinder down on the pad, it stops turning and just orbits in a tight circle.   Heat your juice in hot water, then shake it on your orbital shaker and WA LA you are way ahead in the steeping cycle.

I am about to create a mix that has PGA and Water.  I'm assuming that Everclear is the PGA, and Distilled water would be the water of choice.  Is that correct?

I received a bottle of Black Honey Tobacco by The Flavor Apprentice the other day. It is marketed as being similar to Captain Black pipe tobacco. I've smoked Captain Black many years ago and I can tell you it is no Captain Black. I have been dying to find something like C.B. Some people claim the honey is overpowering and no tobacco taste. I find a liquorice under tone mostly.
I will have to work this flavor a bit and see what I can do to make it better. Good thing I only made 3ml @ 5%.

Dave:  Wizard Labs make a good Capt. Black and a DK555, but it is not, as you said, C.B.  However, mix C.B. and DK555 50/50 and see how you like that.  If it is close you can always slide one or both to get the Blue Ribbon tobacco vape.  The other combo to try is DK555 and RL Camel.  If that is not sweet enough, add some English Blend or M Type.

Thanks Eric may try that. I had added 1/2 Black Honey Tobb and 1/2 Burley Tobb which improved it. Not as sweet as before and more to my liking. The Liquorice taste has disappeared. Still no C.B. but better than before.

How are you feeling buddy? Hope much better.

sparkervape,

I, myself, only use FlavourArts flavorings and I never use the ones that have oil in them.  I'm pretty sure flavorings with oil are something to stay away from.  If you check the forums here and at the EFC forum area, there are lists of flavorings that we should really stay away from, as far as vaping them anyway.

It has been my experience that some the the recipes in Breakthu's software are perfect and others have way to much flavoring.  My rule is to always make 3ml for a test and go low on the flavoring and if I need more flavor, I just add 1 or 2 drops of flavoring and try it again and keep track of the mix.  It is easy to add flavoring, but very hard to remove it  lol.  Hope I helped...

Mahiney:  I don't know what happened to my reply, RE: oils based flavors, That I posted just the other night, so I will hit the salient points here in an effort to save a couple lives.  Using flavors that are oil based can result in lipid or lipoid pneumonia or sometimes referred to as cholesterol pneumonia.  Depending on the quantity and duration of inhalation, this can result in death.  The problem is the difficulty in timely and correct diagnosis.  This is one of the questions the FDA is concerned with   These oil base flavors are probably used in the concentrates used in the food industry where they are consumed, not inhaled.  Also stay away from any flavor containing acetoin, diketones, diacetyl, and acetyl propionyl.  These are proven killers.

Is it better to leave a new open to the air or leave it capped?

I leave all my juice capped while they steep.  Don't want dust and anything else to get inside...

  Trackemdown:

Steeping is not done to "boil" off ethers, it is to allow the molecules (ingredients) which make up a vaping liquid to  meld and form the smooth flavor(s) you are looking for.  Remember, most of the juice is PG and VG and that is what you are trying to flavor and what will be vaporized by the PV.  As an example,  peach concentrate takes between 4 and 6 WEEKS to reach full flavor.

If you want to test the steeping benefit:  Mix a multi-flavor (concentrate) juice.  Try a small sample right after mixing and then every day, at approximately at the same time, each day for the next 7 days.  When it smooths out and taste like the final version of the juice will depend on the flavor you choose to make.  Let us know how your experiment goes.

I'm new here and learning a lot but I have a question about the use of vodka.  What is it being used for?  What kind of flavor (if any) is it adding to a DIY mix?  Don't get me wrong, I really LOVE vodka, lol, but never would have occurred to me to use it in e-juice.  Thanks.
