CGR18650CH being discontinued?
« on: January 17, 2013, 06:54:50 PM »
I've heard from a few places that the Panasonic CGR18650CH is being discontinued, due to lack of demand.  Anyone else heard anything about this?

Also, just who makes batteries, and  who re-labels them?  Obviously Panasonic and Sanyo make their own batteries, but I've got people saying efest and AW each manufacture batteries also.

Most of the cells are manufactured top to bottom in China, but AW makes one that uses the Panasonic NCR18650A. It's their 3100mAh ICR 18650.  I don't know for sure, but I would guess there's a handful of Chinese makers for the round cells and whole bunch of distributors that install things like end caps and protection circuitry then slap their own label on them.

Haven't heard about the CGR18650CH being discontinued, but I looked on Panasonic's industrial web site and it's not there anymore.  That's a bad sign.  I can see why the demand is low on them.  There really aren't many uses for a high drain 18650 other than an e-cig.  Most of the call for 18650s comes from laptop computer battery packs and those use the ICR cells.

Panasonic is probably going to put their efforts into the high capacity cells.  I see they now have an NCR18650B listed with 3350mAh capacity.

AW makes a an IMR 18650 that's close to the Panasonic CGR cell in capacity, 2000mAh.

I managed to grab 10 of the pannies from an ECF co-op, got them a few days ago, so hopefully I'll be set for a while, until something comparable comes about.  I guess the dna20's I'll be building will have to use LiPo packs...

Unfortunately, Li-Ion cells have shelf life.  The ones you have will probably hold up well if you store them with a half charge in a cool place.  They'll lose over half their charge capacity in 5 years if you store them with a full charge.  Faster if they are in a hot environment.  In any case, I'm sure something better will come along by then, like you said.  Who knows, the next great battery revolution could be just on the horizon.

So what's the optimum storage level, voltage-wise?  And would a fridge be a good place to store them, or is that too cold?

Refrigerators are not a definite yay or nay.  I've seen in some data sheets for Li-Ion cells that they should not be refrigerated for more than a year.  Others don't mention it at all.  I keep all mine in my garage refrigerator, but I also have a good thermometer in there to make sure the temperature does not go below freezing.  Refrigeration does in fact double the shelf life when combined with a lower charge level, but long term cold storage more than a few years may do more harm than good.  Unfortunately, I can't say for sure.

Optimum storage charge for 3.7V Li-Ions is 40%.  That's how the factories store them.  That's 3.8 Volts open circuit.
