510 thread specs
« on: November 21, 2012, 01:45:46 PM »
Just got my 7mm-.5 tap in the mail and it only took 8 days from China  I used to have the link to the Totally Wicked page that had that info but I have been banned on the TW forums because expressed the fact that they were giving me the runaround on the return of their POS Odyssey. They told me I could return it but dicked me around on the refund till after their massive 30% sale that was running at the time. I didn't flame anyone but I guess their attitude towards people doesn't stop with ECF.  :thumbsdwn: But it's all good.
(Rant done)
Anyway, I need to know the tap drill size for the 7mm-.3 tap to make 510 threads. Can't find that size in any screw tap chart.
Thanks.

Oh yeah, I was banned on ECF too for posting pics of my ideas for a mod. I was kind of selling it so they banned me FOR LIFE!!! :begging: :laughing2:. Said that if I paid a $50 vendors fee I could get reinstated. Might just do that so I can sell on their forum. :beer-toast:

I don't sell anything anywhere so not to be banned on ECF

On TW I asked why my support emails go unanswered on a product I bought. Bam, intant ban.

Vapor Gossip, have no idea. Nothing going on there anyway. The modders section has nothing.

"F" them both. They suck

Going on normal tap to drill dimension theory, for a M7x0.5 tap you should need a 6.5mm drill.
So, slightly more than a 1/4" but depending on the material you're tapping it should be ok :)

Just found that 6.6 is the right choice. Thanks guys.

The difference between the tap size and the hole size is your thread depth.  The ideal depth varies depending on the thread pitch.  With a 6.6mm hole, you have a .2mm thread depth which, of course, is correct for a .5mm pitch.  You can go smaller on the drill by a few tenths if you want, but don't go bigger.  With a softer material like brass, you can get away with it.  With something like stainless, you don't want to go any deeper on thread depth than you need to or the tap could bind.

Yeah, I have broken a few taps in my day by using a drill slightly under sized on harden stock  :wallbash:
