Multi tester recommendation?
« on: March 08, 2013, 07:01:46 PM »
Hello all.
I am looking for help choosing the most versatile digital multi meter I can get for around $20 - $30 bucks.
The one I have is a cheap Tandy analog... its not sensitive enough to test ohms in attys or very accurate for much of anything.
I am hoping to play around with making some mods and learn basic stuff in the process by extracting parts from other equipment.
I am too new at this to really know what I will need.

Thanks very much, Jason

{edit} I just saw this thread from Midnight Toker http://breaktru.com/smf/index.php/topic,772.0.html that recommends one for $46 (or thereabouts).
Looks pretty good to me and I am willing to spend that, but like I said I am a complete noob.

Before plunging down your hard earned money on that meter, find some reviews. I can't seem to find any nor have I heard of that company.
If I had to buy a new meter, I would look into ExTech, Fluke, Equus, Brymen

There is an Ideal Multimeter in this round of testing accuracy:

Yeah, he gets pretty enthusiastic about electronics.  Once you get over the initial shock, he does a really good job on those videos.

Is the link posted for $50 meter shootout he did?  That sounds more like the price range for the OP.  Any name brand meter should give you good accuracy.  What you really pay for with the more expensive meters is higher resolution and wider range.  If a cheaper one will meet your needs there, you shouldn't have to spend more.  Well, here it is if it wasn't posted already;
