Evercool Steampunk Snus Can
« on: August 18, 2013, 01:37:09 PM »
This one has come out awesome.  I sort of "borrowed" a Fazed design, but used an evercool chip instead of the Nivel.  So, no screen, no LED, but it turned out pretty sweet. The next will be an OKR chip, since they are a little cheaper.

Very nice Phestr. I like the way it looks. Plus the steam punk look really adds a lot to the mod. Keep up the great work!

Would someone mind telling me what the OKR chip is? I'm still dumb about most of the electronics, but I'm trying to become more educated as time goes on. Thanks

http://www.murata-ps.com/en/products/dc-dc-converters/single-output-non-isolated/okr-t-10-w12-c.html

It's a regulator for dual Li-Ion cells in series.  Probably the best buck converter for an e-cig mod.  It's very compact.

My OKR-T/3's came in yesterday, and they are quite small.  I have the 10uf caps to put on them, but I've seen many posts for and against.  I'm using 14500's, will the caps make that much of a difference?

No external capacitors are needed for our application. Murator used additional capacitors to filter AC ripple with their test equipment. We are not concerned with ripple.

Thanx, guys. That'll make the next build way easier. This time...torched can. It should be nice.

That's what's great about the OKR converters, all you need to wire up is the power supply, output, and a series resistor - trim pot.  Couldn't be any easier.  Though I would go with at least the 6 Amp model (T/6).  The 10 Amp model (T/10) is the one I would recommend unless you really have to save two dollars.  They're all the same dimensionally so that's not an issue.

It's my first try with this converter, so I went with the cheapest.  I figured since we always say at least 3 amps at the switch, the T/3 should be good.  But you're right, the price point on the next two isn't that much different.  And I have quite a few Snus cans, and a lot of interested parties, so... :yes"

A couple more I built for guys at work. I charged them cash for materials and beer for labor...beer being the Air Force equivalent of cigarettes in prison. ;)  Used the OKR, and dang, that's way easier than the Evercool. No more exploding caps. 8)  For the finish, I took my butane torch to them. Heat makes these cans turn some awesome colors.

Great looking mods Phestr. You're right, torching the cans really makes them look nice. Glad you're getting people at work to start vaping :)

Great work. Looking real good.
Just a suggestion here... the tanks are great but on a tin case perhaps a shorter tank would be better. The long tank may put too much stress on the 510 mounting. Are the 510 epoxied in?

Have to agree, a shorter tank would look nicer on the mod.

Yep, epoxy putty was used to build up the area around the connector inside the box to about 1/4 inch thick, extending all the way to the bottom of the can.  Then a layer of regular epoxy is added to make sure the connector doesn't move. THe only shorter tank I have is a glass Protank, which is still heavy, so I went to the side of caution.
