Raidy's use any switch diagram
« on: October 24, 2013, 04:16:09 PM »
I went browsing through ecf's battery mods and found a gem from member Raidy

Inexpensive  and works great!

The 1k resistor is in the wrong place.  It needs to be between the battery positive and the touch probe.  It does nothing where it's located in the diagram and I believe the intent is to protect the battery from short circuits.  That can happen with the circuit as shown if the positive touch probe is inadvertently contacted to a grounded metal chassis.  Such as the case if the mod is in your pocket with loose change or keys.

Another issue with this circuit is the potential for ESD damage.  That MOSFET is not protected.  A protected MOSFET should be used since the gate terminal is highly susceptable to damage by ESD (electrostatic discharge).  They can get damaged quite easily by simply touching the gate terminal when left floating like that.  It doesn't even have to be enough to feel a shock.  A protected MOSFET has TVS diodes built-in between the gate and source, but you can add an external TVS diode to do the same job if you want to use an unprotected FET.

For 99 cents its not worth it then, I was dancing happy about this find.. It does work really well but there's now that, what you said..
I'll give ya the thread you will love it.  This is on page 14,  Its the guy who invented the genesis and ss mesh use in e cigs.. He has about 80 mods, they are highlighted in that post.

That circuit is mostly good.  Just move the 1k resistor and use a protected MOSFET then you're golden.

Negative on ECF, don't go there anymore, haven't for a couple years now.

Well said.  I think most new modders start there, and then the few that are serious about learning end up here.  There's just too much chaff and grand standing to wade through.

Not to get on an ECF rant, but that forum has some issues stemming from its size and moderation policies and mission statement (to make money).  It's just not a pleasant atmosphere there.

That circuit has been floating around for some time. I even seen it here on this forum before somewhere.
There are many other circuits like that if you search this forum using "Mosfet"
