Wire Strippers
« on: December 10, 2013, 12:10:48 AM »
Anyone have a good recommendation for wire strippers? I've been using ones similar to these: http://goo.gl/PKRizF for a year now but I want something that's a bit faster, easier on my fingers, and won't break the bank. I've heard the electric ones that basically melt the insulation off at a point are awesome but they are too expensive for my taste, at least the ones I've seen.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I use these and have done for years http://www.ebay.com/itm/Automatic-Wire-Stripper-Cutter-light-and-handy-0-2-3sqmm-NEW-Freeshipping-/261347153939?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cd9811813 - There are more expensive and hard wearing tools out there but for the amount i use them for they work great for me

I've just been using a razor blade anymore.  I do a circle around the wire and pull off the piece.  I seem to have some kind of metal block against proper wire strippers.  I actually have a couple pairs laying around, they're the kind with the crimper which I rarely use.

I should mention I also use Craigs method above when I need a break in the wires coating ie if i'm going to two separate spots with the same piece of wire I cut round twice and remove the piece of shielding

Of the several wire strippers I have (not all are shown in the photo below), there is only one I use exclusively. The Stanley 85-213 which I have used for 44 years. Right after High School I got this wiring job where I wired and soldered for 8 hours a day using the said wire strippers. I love the smell of Napalm Lead Solder in the morning.

Breaktru is too modest to announce that he has in fact successfully managed to mod his retinas into the newest laser wire cutters imaginable - For the rest of us mere mortals we would have to rely on things like this...

http://youtu.be/D5j3lvWhV1k

However Dave can now strip wires with his left eye - Whilst heating his coffee with his right eye - Leaving his hands free to carry on modding - Stay tuned for his helping hand skin graft mod... :D

 :laughing2:

I could do that with a razor cutter in a fraction of the time it takes to setup the wires in the jig, run the laser and manually peel off the insulation. And save a million bucks by not having to buy the laser cutter

Yup, those are the best although they take some getting used to

Bit of a necro but FWIW these are excellent and reasonably priced: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/12630
