Looking for some good NC switches
« on: April 05, 2012, 12:48:34 PM »
Title says it all, all the switches I have ever seen are just blah. Looking to knock out  another evercool mod but looking for a sexy ass switch.  Look forward to anything someone comes up with. and sorry if I offended anyone.

I thought for the ptn04050c you needed NO switches but for the ptn08100w you need to use a NC switch.

I thought for the ptn04050c you needed NO switches but for the ptn08100w you need to use a NC switch.

The 08100w, 08060w and the OKR-T can use either a N.O. or if you use the inhibit pin, a N.C. pin to ground
With power applied to the Vin pin and leaving the inhibit pin floating turns on the converter and sending a low-level ground signal via a N.C. tact switch will turn off the converter.

I personally never use the inhibit pin. I prefer applying voltage to the converter only when needed via a N.O. 3amp P.B.
That is my preference and I am not condemning those who go the inhibit pin route. Note: the OKR-T pin is called the Remote on/off control pin and the 08100w/08060w call it the inhibit pin. All use Pin 1.

I would also go that route.  The regulator is going to draw some power even in shut-down mode.  Normally not a big deal if you use your PV daily, but if you leave one laying around, it could drain the cell.  Not a problem for a protected cell, but could damage an unprotected cell.

Unless you need to power other electronics, it's always best to enable and disable power at the battery.  Even with other electronics, I use a solid state switch to enable and disable power to the dc-dc converter.  The converter never runs in shut-down mode.

Cool so I will avoid pin 1 then plus their are better N.O switches  Thanks again guys for the info.

I went back and looked at your evercool copper and seen you did avoid pin 1. I think in Blues diagram he used pin 1 hence the NC switch but if I don't need I will skip it. I see you also used a 240 ohm resister and his is 220 I cant seem to find it in the ohm chart (for the life of me or just brain farting haven't figured it out yet) on your evercool copper mod thread what is the difference in Vout with the different ohms?

I did use a 220 ohm fixed resistor which would give you about 6volts on the high-end w/ the pot zeroed out.
I show a 240 ohm in my drawing to coincide w/ the datasheet. 240 ohm will give you 5.5v at the high end. The converter top end voltage is spec'ed at 5.5v. My mod has a 3.6volts to 6.14volts range.
