Problem with Vaping
« on: June 17, 2013, 03:21:01 PM »
I started vaping 11 years after I successfully quit using tobacco products on my own.
I wanted to realize the various health benefits of nicotine.

But I've noticed, after vaping for a few months, some lung issues (coughing, wheezing) and would like to stop vaping while continuing to use nicotine.

I wonder if I can use the juice-me-up calculator to determine % of nicotine to create nicotine candy/lozenges.

I hope some of you have some thoughts on this.

Wow! vaping 11 years. Didn't think it was around then.
Don't know how you would use the calc for lozenges or hard candy but I found this: DIY Nicotine Candy

I think he means he stopped using tobacco products 11 years ago, but started vaping recently.

Actually, you should be able to vape moderately without any impact on your lung capacity.  Vaping can be an irritant if either done profusely or if there is an issue with your equipment or juice.  I would take a good look at my juice and gear before forming a blanket opinion that vaping is causing me breathing issues.  I've encountered that myself before with liquids that don't vape clean or atomizers that do not peform properly.  It's certainly possible you are intolerant to vaping, but I'd make sure it wasn't something I was doing wrong on my end.

If you want to make you're own nicotine lozenges, I don't think you're going to find much help here.  We're all vapers.  There's issues with nicotine levels and intake we've worked out over the years as vapers.  With lozenges, you'd be on your own.  Nicotine is poisonous in large doses so it's not something to experiment with.  I would recommend against it.  You can buy nicotine lozenges at the pharmacy or use Snus to safely use nicotine orally.

So true.

Moderation? I'm not sure I understand. That word isn't in my vocabulary.

Look, I'm a true believer. Vaping is 1000x better than smoking. Heck, I sell e-juice locally and tell everyone I meet about the virtues of vaping over smoking, but inhaling anything except air is not what human lungs are for, and even vaporized vegetable glycerine and propylene glycol logically will have some effects on lungs, even if it's just a drying effect.

If you want to make you're own nicotine lozenges, I don't think you're going to find much help here.

Oh but I have and I thank y'all for it.

I am interested in knowing if you ever made the lozenges

Funny you should ask.
I've found two methods.
I went over to a local store Friday afternoon called  Sugarbakers (they sell fondant and fancy cake making supplies, and bought two microwavable plastic mold trays, one with indents shaped like the top of a round diamond (single-cut), and one with little rectangles like the tops of tiny Hershey® bars. I also bought a few bags of sugar-free hard candy in assorted flavors.
I plan to place the candies in the molds (there are 64 indents in each sheet) and melt them to a semi-liquid in the microwave, drip in the right amount of nicotine (in VG), stir and pop ém into the freezer to re-harden.
(As per the link above)
But I don't like the idea of dripping nicotine into hot candy. I suspect the efficacy of the nicotine will be diminished.
Therefore I wanted to find a method that didn't involve heat...

I also bought a box of Satin Ice brand "Gum Paste" ready to use (sugar, corn syrup, water, palm oil, gum tragacanth (stabilizer), egg white, titanium dioxide (coloring), cellulose gum (thickener), natural & artificial flavors, modified corn starch, potassium sorbate (preservative), acetic acid (preservative). Serving size 35g, calories per serving, 130 (from fat 5), .5g fat, 0g saturated fat, 0g trans-fat, 0mg cholesterol, 10mg sodium, 32g carbs, 0g dietary fiber, 28g sugar, 0g protein, 0% of vitamin A, C, calcium & iron)

I've grabbed 10 grams of it (it's like a very thick spackling compound), and made some 2% nicotine solution (VG) with no flavor and mixed 1ml (1cc) into the gum paste while wearing rubber gloves.
After kneading it in well,  I broke off five, 2 gram pieces, rolled them into balls and pushed them into the diamond shaped indents.

The guy at the cake store says if you leave the stuff out overnight, it gets hard as a rock, and will dissolve in your mouth (it's used to make really detailed flowers and other things (you can add food coloring to it)).

I've tasted it plain and it's a pleasant cake-icing flavor. Sorta vanilla.

I'll test it later when it hardens and report my observations.

Commercial lozenges contain nicotine polacrilex. I might see if I can buy some. This gum paste costs around $10 for a 24oz box. http://www.environmental-expert.com/products/purolite-c115hmr-polacrilex-resin-160156

A quick search of Google tells me it's also used in the water purifying industry and in biodiesel processing and appears to be quite expensive.  http://tinyurl.com/ooe7htt

But I ain't gonna give up on learning more about it.

BTW, I have two friends who are biologists/chemists, professors at the local university, and access to them & their labs, I have a small lab set up in my workshop with all the necessary tools and such (including an eye wash station and chemical shower, so before yáll start warning me about the dangers of chemicals...)

In my regular profession I use cyanide's (for electroplating) and strong reagent grade acids (for precious metals refining) and am extremely aware of all the dangers involved in chemistry-related stuff, though I'm not a chemist.

I hope this information helps someone!

Thank you for your wonderful detailed post uhclem. It is very informative.
You are very fortunate to have a store like Sugarbakers nearby.

I guess ingesting nicotine will not be any more dangerous than inhaling it if the dose is with in a safe limit.
Evenly blending the nic into the batch is probably important too. Do you think adding the nic to a boiling mix would be a problem?

Thanx for saying so. I'm sure there are similar stores around the county. I live in a fairly small city.

Yes, and I'll probably have to be a lab rat and test my candy myself, which is why I'm starting with such low doses.

Well, we know heat is what makes cigarette and vaping work, so I'm guessing it is. When I get the dose right with the "spackling compound" I'll then try the microwaved candy.
