other forms of steeping
« on: November 06, 2013, 02:06:52 PM »
hi,
i know some folks out here are great when it comes to Diy and steeping process and I came across this info on another forum I am in,and thought of sharing it to guys here
hopefully this would help newbies like me

copy pasted from another forum..
please notify my if this is not ok here...

Supferrets recommends - I secure a ten-foot length of rope to the bottle and swing it around like a centrifuge until my arms give out. This is followed by a hot holy water bath and a blessing from a priest. I then meditate with the juice in a hypobaric chamber until it is tasty.
Other, inferior methods:
Griffinthekid recommends - A good 2 minute shake upon receiving, then leaving to sit for a day or two with occasional follow up shakes gives pretty good results without much work.
Jack_Shid recommends - Simply try when you receive, if you don't like it yet, toss it in a cool dark place (like a shoebox) for a week and try again until you like it.
Slumberland recommends - Microwave dry uncooked rice in a glass container, put bottles in lids and caps off. less messy than a hot water bath.
NubbieVapor recommends - Throw the bottles in a zip lock bag to prevent the labels from getting messed up and soak in hot water, then move them to the dark spot with the lid off for 24 hours.
For those with access to expensive equipment, Whoblah recommends - Hot water in an ultrasonic cleaner for about 40 minutes of cycles, shake bottles well during rests if the unit if is temperamental and needs a rest after a few cycles. Take out and let cool to room temp, let them sit a day or two with a shake here and there.
For those willing to wait for the best, i_is_surf recommends - Grab one of these (The single ones, not the set of six, which can be had at Wal-Mart for $6 and some change) that I covered the walls with cardboard. Anytime I get a new juice, I give it a good shake, take the top off, and stick it in the drawer for about a week and shake it periodically. After that week, I start vaping it.
CurlinTX recommends a solution that may be possible for the married men (or women) amongst us - For homogenization - 8 hours in a Dr. Shoal's Foot Bath with the heat and vibration on. (Closed bottles, double bagged) Then take cap off the warm bottles overnight. Test, then let sit for a week if they still taste thin.
While TrimPot gives some good timings - Take the cap off and let it sit for a few days. Thug juice hits it's prime in about a week, most sweet flavors take a few days.
VaporRater provides his very patient method - The cap is removed and squeezed lightly to allow fresh air into the bottle. It is then shaken well and placed in a drawer. It then goes thru the same procedure every other day or two for the next 3 weeks. Given, most juice doesn't require this kind of treatment [...] If after this procedure it still has an alcohol or floral, perfume-y overtone (extremely rare after my normal steeping process) as SteamMonkey mentioned, I allow it to sit, uncovered for 6-8 hours, and then try it again.
SteamMonkey, as per usual, provides the definitive explanation of breathing (which we usually call steeping, which is wrong, stop it) and homogenisation in his comment below. Definitely have a good read and happy vaping!

also i would add my own
hot water bath
after mixing, put the bottles in a ziplock then throw it in a dryer along with other clothes so make sure ziploxk are tight...
then a hot water bath...

thanks hopefully it helps others too.. :)

so far this works best for me

I secure a ten-foot length of rope to the bottle and swing it around like a centrifuge until my arms give out. This is followed by a hot holy water bath and a blessing from a priest. I then meditate with the juice in a hypobaric chamber until it is tasty

good things priest are always around my areas//

I've started heating some juices up then placing them under a vacuum to speed the evaporation of any alcohol...

Is alcohol very prevalent in flavorings? Mainly FlavorWest, which I use?

I've taken my hand sander that accepts 1/4 sheets of sandpaper, made a "loop-strap" out of two zip ties, ran the strap around each of the sandpaper clamps. Then wrap the bottle very well in doubled and tripled over paper towel. Squeeze air out so that the straps and latches will lock down holding the bottle in place on the sander. Turn it on, and lay it on its side for about 15 mins.

The friction will eat through a bottle with the zip ties if not wrapped, but the friction also provides heat while shaking :)

Is it a good steeping process, idk, I don't really steep juices being DIY. Mix - fill. I did try it though when I got into some complex recipes with 3-4 flavors, and it does a great job at mixing them well.

Could somebody give a clearer instructable about steeping in an ultrasonic cleaner? (mine has auto shut off after 3 mins, maybe I have to get a different one)

I use the centrifuge method, swing a baggie full of little bottles at the end of a rope, but not till my arm falls off. I use this for the every 5 minute shake when the baggie of bottles is sitting in the hot water that is slowly cooling off. Just experimenting tho.

I like the strapping to a palm sander idea, makes sense.

Most of this page is joking tho, so that doesn't really help people looking for other forms of steeping. Once I figure out my recipe as good to go I will be able to stash them away in a dark drawer for a few weeks. Until then I am looking for more useful info, to create a good recipe minus the weeks of waiting. Thanks!

I picked up cheap ultra-sonic cleaner and it has the auto-shutoff at 3 minutes without any adjustment.  It baffles me why anyone would produce a cleaner with no adjustment on the timer.  Had I known, I would have bought a different one.  Every time I use it, I have to go back and press the button every 3 minutes three times.  Just superiorly annoying.  You know what they say, "buy cheap, buy twice."  I'm so guilty of that.

3 minute shut-off is crazy.
I reload ammo and have a nice brass Tumbler that would probably work out great.

I agree claphamvapelover and I use this method regularly.  The milk frother works, especially I find with cake / sweet mixes - not so much success with tobacco's.

I am 99% certain that the key to steeping is not just the act of mixing the liquids together but the process of oxygenation ... and since the process with the frother gets bubbles into the juice turning it milky, I think it starts to back the theory up.  I find this a much more successful approach than ultrasonic cleaners which do change the colour of liquids but do little to the flavour ... imho

Makes sense about oxygenation. Thanks Ash and Clapham.
Then again what do I know. I vape my juice right after I make it. I can't tell the difference in the stuff I had made two weeks ago sitting opened on the shelf. I'm probably taste impaired.

Lol ... I reckon I am taste impaired as well.  A recipe I mixed the other days tastes of coffee to others ... no coffee in it ... it was supposed to be a baccy.

I do think the "wait 6 weeks" mantra is wrong. It suits some juices, doesn't suit others.  A juice can be ready to vape straight away and turn bad 6 weeks later.

Yeah, Perhaps it's the juice I'm making that doesn't need steeping. I do have some mixes that actually taste worse as it ages. Especially if has peach in it. Tends to bite.

Jose:  I wrote this piece back in September and will drop it in here again, because I don't know where it is now.

Let me start by pointing out, no one forces you to steep.  That is your choice.  However, if you want the true flavor of your mix,  most of the time you MUST steep.  That said, this is chemistry!  Pure and simple, add a little solvent, mix in some acid, and marry it to a plant extract and you get an elixir that smells and taste like strawberries or some other human delight.  Leave that same juice to steep and meld and you have a strawberry jam like grandma use to make.  Why, because, this is chemistry, not rocket science.  Rocket science, you work your ass off to get everything mixed in just right, ten you stick a match to it's tail and you instantly have the final results of your endeavors. We, on the other hand, introduce strangers from the far corners of who knows where and ask them to play a symphony they have never heard before.  (Damn, I love these metaphors.  I'm going to do this in the morning from now on.)  It's not going to be as wonderful the first day as it will after they have had time to practice.

That said, let me throw a monkey wrench in too confuse things a bit.  There are certain flavors that, when mixed as singles, require NO steeping.  Let me reword that,  most flavors, when mixed alone require LITTLE or NO steeping.  It is easier to tell you the worst of the lot, than identify all the ones that do well without steeping when mixed as a single.  I think the worst is peach.  Peach can take from 3 to 6 weeks (Yes, Ethel, he said weeks) to attain that wonderful, sweet smell and taste.  I think this paragraph, BASICALLY, explains why we need to steep when mixing two or more concentrates into a vaping delight.  Now the process.

Hold your ears.  I'm going to yell.  DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT STEEP IN THE MICROWAVE!!!  Regardless of what the guy who has been mixing and vaping since 1795 tells you, don't do it.  Remember, I said these concentrates are made from chemicals?  Some of those chemicals have a very low flash point.  For instance:  The chemical that give you that nice Turkish Tobacco taste, has a flash point of 212 degrees F.  Now that is at full strength, but strange thing happen when you play with the chemistry set.  Throw in this and that and you may have supplied a catalyst that makes the chemical more volital.  When that happens, you will be down at the home store shelling out the money you saved for that new mod on a new microwave instead.   If you will kindly take notice; PG, VG, nic, and some of the concentrates are quite thick.  Unless you put some water or alcohol in the mix, these thick fluids are not going to jump into each others laps.  They are going to layer.  OH Yea, the guy in the back hollers out.  I shake the hell out of my mixes.  Try this.  In a graduated cylinder, somewhat larger than 10ml, if you have it (if you don't, make a 5ml batch.  It is important you use a cylinder), put the following:

                  PG = 4.75ml
                  VG = 1.75ml
Cherry = 1.2ml  *Use a concentrate like Wizard Lab's.  It is a bright red color
Capt. Black = 1.8  (A very mild tobacco flavor from Wizard Labs.)
MTS = 3 drops  **This is a flavor smoother made by Flavor Art.

When you have these in the cylinder.  Put your thumb over the top and shake it.  After shaking, notice the red stuff is still isolated in the middle.  Now you have seen, with your own eyes, why we need to steep.  Now, put your mix into a bottle and cap it.  This is where the micro comes into play.  Boil about a cup or a cup and a half of water.  When it boils, remove it from the micro and put the closed bottle of mix into the boiling water.  About every 5 minutes, take the bottle out and shake it.  Let the juice stay in the water until it has cooled to the tepid stage. Notice, all the contents have mixed.  You just, at the very least, started the steeping process.  You can vape it now and get a better idea of how it is going to finish.  The longer it sits the better it should get.  Also, the richer you mix, the more important steeping become.

Without getting all PHD here, I think you should have a better understanding why steeping is necessary.  Remember, this dissertation primarily addressed the process from a mechanical point of view.  However, chemically, the same principals are at play.  I hope this has been of help and has not been b  o  r  i  n  g .  Also, enjoy the juice you made, it is really good.  Even for those who don't like tobacco flavors to much.

Dave:    Peach takes 3 to6 weeks to completely cure and meld into the other molecules.

This is an orbital buffer like you would use to polish your car.  I use it to mix my DIY mixes before I transfer them from the graduated cylinder to the bottle and later when they are in the bottle, when necessary.  As soon as you put something on the pad, it stops turning and just orbits.  It's fun to watch the juice in the tube.
